I have fond memories of very entertaining afternoons in west end with “Fr Liam” and years later my parents and I had the privilege of meeting up with him in Lourdes. Such a lovely gentle man. I hold great memories of our football days with St. Josephs many years ago and only a few short years ago I had the honour of a visit of Liam to my home for a chat and will treasure a lovely picture of that visit. I remember his visits to Lough Derg on the first weekend of the pilgrimage season to officiate at the 1830hrs Mass, giving weary pilgrims encouragement to stay alert on this sacred island. He came across as genteel and kind greeting pilgrims at the end of Mass.

May he now enjoy the rewards of Heaven in the company of his loved ones and fellow priests Fr Richard Mohan and Fr Pat RIP.

I will be in Lough Derg on Sunday 27th August and will remember him at Mass.

He was a really decent, caring and genuine individual who, as career guidance teacher in St. Macartan's in the late '70', had a hugely positive impact on my life and, I have no doubt, the lives of many others who passed through the school during that era. A cultured and unassuming man, Bishop Liam's legacy is his steadfast commitment to the teachings of the Catholic Church. He was unflinching. This leadership protected Catholics. His death is a huge loss to the faithful of Catholic Ireland, at a time of threat to core beliefs, when there is dire need for leaders of his kind. He was a stalwart. Greatly missed.
