Sincere sympathy to the Delaney family on the passing of Monsignor John. The Monsignor was a great supporter of Claremorris Golf Club. One of the most eagerly awaited competitions throughout the 1980’s was the Monsignor John Delaney sponsored day. May he Rest in Peace.
Msgr John Delaney was a noble son of Mayo. He had a towering presence and stood out in any company. His keen intellect was easy to discern and he was always fair and balanced in his many observations about matters and events making the news.
I have known Fr John for over 40 years and I will miss his regular phone calls from Florida, many of them about Mayo football and team changes! He retained strong and abiding bonds of friendship with his home region through his amazing dedication to supporting Mayo and Garrymore. Faithful to the last, his final visit to Croke Park was a few months ago on St Patrick’s Day to see St Colman’s College, Claremorris, in action against St Patrick’s College, Maghera (Derry) in the All Ireland Hogan Cup Final.
He was the annual Super Bowl ‘correspondent’ on the first Sunday night of February on my Late Show on Midwest Radio for many years and delighted in coming on the phone from Florida giving live updates.
Msgr John had a delightful sense of humour and a wonderful ability to remember names and occasions. It is fitting that his funeral Mass will be celebrated in his beloved Crossboyne Church by the banks of the River Robe and the garden donated by the Delaney family to the parish.
“Act each like a brother and help one another,
Like stout-hearted men from the County Mayo.”

Deepest sympathy to all the Delaney Family of whom John was so proud. I know it was a real, if sad privilege for him to be able to preside at the Requiem Masses not only for his parents but also for all his brothers and sisters. For those of us who came to know John as part of his second family of All Hallows we too are left with treasured memories of his amazing kindness, good humour and generosity.
John. may you continue to proudly wave The Banner of the Lord from your new heavenly home - and when you do I suspect the colour scheme may well be the Red and Green!

My sincere sympathy to all of the Delaney family as you grieve the loss of Msgr. John. I was a contemporary of John's at All Hallows College in Dublin and have been blessed by his friendship over these many years since then. Msgr. John was a true churchman who had a stellar ministry in the Archdiocese of Miami. Gifted with special gifts of mind and heart he radiated light, joy and human warmth at all times. Msgr. John's love for his extended family, for Ireland, for his native County of Mayo and for his alma mater, All Hallows was truly edifying. May he be given the well deserved reward of Eternal Life!

Your suffering is over, thank God - your crown awaits as do your beloved friends. Till you meet them, sleep well dear friend.
