Myra was a wonderful, vibrant and entertaining aunt. She had a lively wit and was always good company. She was well travelled and worldly, having lived in London for some years. We had a shared appreciation of the charms of Italy, though I’m quite sure she had the better grasp of the language!

Childhood milestones were punctuated with her cards and letters, and I tried to return the favour as much as possible. We corresponded regularly from primary school to adulthood, and receiving a package with her beautiful, signature handwriting was always an event. I was curious to hear her stories from her time in London, especially after I moved there myself. We compared notes on how fortunes had changed for the Irish in London.

As a child, myself and my siblings created wonderful memories on her farm, the only family link we really had to rural Ireland. Later, when she moved back to Dublin, I regularly used to call by her house in Marino for a cup of tea and some enthusiastic gossiping about whatever politician or celebrity was scandalising Irish society that week. Even well into her eighties, she was well informed on current affairs, so there was never a dull moment.

I am sure the last couple of years were hard for her, as they were for many elderly people in Ireland. Sadly, I did not get to see her as much as I would have liked over recent years, but she was in my thoughts regularly. I will always remember her fondly as the kind soul that she was.
