May I offer my most sincere condolences to Neil's family and close friends.

Very sadly, I had lost contact with Neil over latter years but - on learning of his recent return to Ireland - had planned to meet him this Spring. As the French say, however: " L'homme propose mais Dieu dispose...".

In earlier years, he had been a fantastic volunteer at 'Friends of the Elderly' (where I worked as an organiser) and at its French sister association 'Les Petits Frères'.

We quickly became friends. I have so many wonderful memories of his hugely entertaining dinner parties in Dublin, Fenor, Powerscourt (Waterford), Paris and - finally - Galway.

He was an exceptional man - a terrific linguist, teacher, administrator, friend and humanitarian.

He had a fantastic sense of wit - at times 'mordant' but always funny - and a truly great sense of humour.

We were all the richer for knowing him.

May his much loved soul rest in peace.

Adrian, Nenagh
Looking at Neil’s picture brings back happy memories of studying for an Arts degree in UCC. From reading other entries, it’s clear he lost none of his wit and charm in the many years since then. Condolences to his family and friends and may he rest in peace.
Sincere sympathy to Joanne and family on Neil passing. May he rest in peace.
We were so sorry to read of Neil's passing. We were neighbours, although not for very long, and met just a handful of times, but it was clear that he was a caring person, a thoughtful and kind neighbour. Our sincerest condolences to all his family and friends. May he rest in peace.
Our deepest sympathy and condolences to Neil's loved ones. Neil has welcomed us into our neighborhood with special care, enlightening our community with support, humor, and knowledge. Our exchange of gifts and books has made our DC stay extra special and through that, we will always carry a piece of his memory with us. May Neil rest in piece, he will be dearly missed
My most sincere condolences to all of Neil’s loved ones. I am deeply saddened to hear this news. I have been one of Neil’s neighbors in DC for nearly 10 years, and I appreciate the many moments we shared. I was always happy to run into him in our building or around the neighborhood. He always made time to chat, catch up, and share a laugh. Neil always had a way of brightening my day with his humor and genuine care for others. He will be greatly missed.
Neil was the mayor of Chapin Street. He could seemingly speak the language, no matter how obscure, of each neighbor. Neil was a citizen of the world, interested in current events, international affairs, art, religion, and culture. He always had a quick quip ready for any audience. Neil will be missed.
My deepest condolences to Neil's loved ones. Neil was my neighbor for the last 10 years in DC and was always so kind and friendly and went out of his way to be helpful. He will be missed! May he rest in peace.
My condolences to Neil's friends and family. I lived across the hall from Neil for many years in Washington, DC. He was a beloved neighbor and friend. So sorry to hear about Neil.He was a lovely person and family cousin and friend for many years .He will be sadly missed. May he R.I.P
I was shocked and saddened to hear the news of Neil's death. Neil was a truly remarkable man and I echo what others have said about his impressive education, knowledge, and linguistic abilities as well as his wicked sense of humor and clever wit. Neil held a special place in my heart because he alone understood my background as an Irish protestant from Wicklow. He teased me unmercifully about this but in an affectionate and funny way. I am glad he made it back to Ireland as we often talked about it. His departure leaves a marked absence in the world and I shall miss him. I am very sorry for your loss. May his memory be a blessing.
So sorry to hear about Neil's passed. I had lots of fond memories of working with Neil. Neil was a great support and help to me in my careers and I will be forever grateful. May you rest in peace and you will now be back in the arms of Carlos.:-)

My deepest sympathy to Neil’s family and friends on his death. I have the fondest memories of Neil especially from his years in Cork and Lille. When he was living in Lille, such was his prowess in French that many of the locals were convinced that he too was a Lillois! Fear eirimiuil, cumasach, greannmhar, gramhar ab ea e. Solas na bhflaitheas air agus ar a anam cara Carlos.

We have many wonderful memories of times spent with Neil and Carlos
discussing our life dreams! We had so many lively debates in which Neil would entertain us all with his sharp wit, easy intelligence and his devilish sense of humour.
We will especially treasure those days at home in Boatstrand where we would round off a lively afternoon together with the mandatory homemade treats, good coffee and the odd drop of the creator for good measure!!

Shocked to hear of Neil's death. We worked together in Algeria in 2006 and 2007, Vermont in 2009 and 2010, and hung out regularly in DC until Carlos died. Many of his U.S. friends and colleagues will be devastated to hear he's gone. He had a wicked sense of humor, was way too smart for most people, except Carlos. The world is a lesser place without him.

I feel incredibly lucky to have worked alongside Neil when I first started working in WIT. I will fondly remember him as an entertaining character with an effortlessly sharp wit that made every day I worked with him an enjoyable one. His perceptive nature, incisive mind and ability to provide a general running commentary on life made conversations in work and even more so on our many nights out meaningful and engaging. He had a brilliant way with words that resonated long after he spoke them. His legacy isn't just in his dedicated commitment to teaching and education but in the people he inspired.

Neil, you were one of a kind and I will never forget your kindness, generosity, guidance, warm-heartedness and most of all your linguistic flair. May you now be reunited with your beloved Carlos.
