Sincere condolences to Nell's family, especially Carmel and her many friends, on her sad passing. Thank you Nell, for your bravery and for speaking out and being the voice for the women of Ireland, especially when on many occasions it may not have been popular. We are eternally grateful and Ireland is a better place because of you. Rest in peace now.
Condolences to the McCafferty family and friends on the recent death of Nell.
Obviously like most people I knew Nell mostly from the TV/radio and some of her writing, but back in 2013 I met her on the street in Paris (probably Rue Mouffetard). As it happens we were staying in the Irish Cultural Centre close by but didn't know that at the time.

We were both looking for a place to eat, so we linked up. I was a bit nervous, as at least in some of our views, we would not see eye to eye ! However I needn't have worried, we had a great chat about all sorts of things, and Nell was good company. May she rest in peace.
I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Nell on a couple of occasions, initially at a writers' workshop she facilitated in Cavan immediately before I started my first staff job at a newspaper in February 2007. The second time was in 2009, I had the privilege of interviewing her during her trip to Monaghan for International Women's Day — no pressure! She was wonderful, inspiring and a brilliant source of advice. Deepest sympathies to all who knew and loved her. Her loss has been deeply felt by the journalistic profession.
Sincerest condolences to Carmel and the McCafferty families on the Death of Nell

Nell, one of my earliest memories is seeing you stand up to the establishment without batting an eyelid, a brave and fearless force to be reckoned with! You instantly became an icon to me. Thank you for all that you have done for Mná na hÉireann, our generation and generations to come are and will be the beneficiaries of your Trojan work and activism. Codladh sámh Nell.
I grew up in 80’s Ireland where the Kerry Babies scandal happened and a teenage girl and her infant died in a grotto after she had given birth. Journalists like Nell were writing about this and forcing society and the State to take a look at ourselves and do better. How lucky were we to have grown up with a different and more compassionate point of view and to have been inspired by Nell and others to ask questions and demand better. Good night Sister. Codladh sámh dá hanam uasal.
Slán abhaile Nell🕯
Dear Nell and family,

I loved your no nonsense, honest insight in to every topic you engaged in. Always Articulate, forthright and fair, you made me and others sit up, shut up and listen. You were driven to positive change. Thank you for your courage to do so, women in Ireland owe you a dept in gratitude. May we be inspired to have the courage to fight for what is right and offer Kindness where we can. Rest easy Nell & thank you, thank you, thank you

We are sorry to have lost such an outspoken lady. May she rest in peace.
Sincere condolences on the death Nell. A great lady.
I was so sorry to hear of Nell passing away. I just knew her public persona but i have a feeling it was much the same as her private. She made such a huge difference in womens lives. She seemed to be fearless. Loved her TV appearances, you never knew what she would say. Rest in Peace Nell you richly deserve it.
Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann. Codladh sámh Nell.
Thank you Nell, you inspired and encouraged us. You taught us to question, to challenge and to hope. A life well lived.
There will only ever be one Nell McCafferty. You were a force to be reckoned with. May you Rest In Peace.
What a powerful woman Nell was. Those of us who grew up in the oppression of 60s Ireland can truly appreciate the courage and spirit of the women who refused to be oppressed any longer. Nell, we owe you tremendous gratitude for changing the Ireland we grew up in. You and your comrades blazed a trail to show us we could use our voices; make our own choices; and refuse to be oppressed. Thank you Nell for shaping an Ireland of freedom, where women matter, and their voices count.
Thank you for the humour; the nativity story stands out for me. We are the richer for having had you. Ni bheidh a leitheid aris.
Sincere Sympathy to the extended family on the death of Nell, a fearless warrior, but with a heart of gold. A human being who shook Ireland up when it needed doing.
I had the great pleasure of meeting her and Nuala many times when they lived in Lahinch, and have very vivid memories of one particular Sunday lunch !!
Rest in Peace Nell. You'r work here is done !

You taught me not to allow injustice in any way or place rip sister
Oh Nell may you rest in peace work done. I recall you on the late late show and my father just loved you l can still hear him cheering you on and loved you were not afraid to say your truth. If he were alive he would be 106years. Thanks for the memories
I loved Nells irreverence in the face of the establishment and her courage in saying what needed to be said especially but not exclusively for women...young people have no idea of the Ireland she spoke and wrote about and the changes that were needed for women too afraid to speak up themselves but Nell flew the flag with courage and conviction and brought us all on the journey to FREEDOM...love from a fellow traveller who benefited from her couragexx
God rest you Nell. You were some woman to help the woman of Ireland who were treated so badly by the Catholic Church , nuns and priests alike. You called a spade a spade and didn’t stand back from (the valley of the squinting windows ). Thank you Nell.
What l inspiration woman for us to have in 1980s. You got us all men and woman to check the establishment and ask questions they didn’t want us to ask. Your work is done and we will be forever grateful Nell.
Thank you Nell.

Good Night Sisters

And In Gratitude
Nell I remember you challenging the establishment on the late late show when I was a child. I didn't like you. I realised as i got older you scared me because you challenged people and you had the courage of your convictions. In an ireland where women were expected to be silent you were not afraid to speak your truth. You changed this country and you will be missed forever. Thank you
Condolences to Nell's family and extended family and friends may Nell rest in peace

We are forever indebted to you Nell for taking a stand when it wasn’t the done thing, for making change & making women’s voices heard. You were a trailblazer. We will never see the likes of Nell again.

Your work is now done. May you rest easy Nell. 💔🌹
A brave, outspoken, inspirational woman. I’v admired her all my live. Rest In Peace Nell. Thank you for standing up for our rights.
Nell, I want to mark your passing with gratitude and appreciation... You were a beacon of light in, what was then, a very dark country. Your work and actions to raise awareness of the oppression of women and marginalised people inspired us in Cork to develop the Cork Women's Collective, the Cork Women's Action Group, the Mna Feasa Domestic Violence Project and many many other community initiatives to highlight poverty and oppression. In particular I recall the womens mobilisation in Tralee, to protest the travesty of justice meted out to Joanne Hayse. May your spirit of Freedom, fun and commitment to social justice, continue to inspire and encourage these next generations of younger Women and Men in our country...I lionta De go gcastar sin go leir...ni crioch ach ath Fhas.
Sending our sincere condolences to Carmel and the extended McCafferty families.. may Nell rest in eternal peace 🙏
Good night sister, rest in heavenly peace you were simply one in a million.condolence to all this wonderful ladys family
Sad to learn of Nells passing. She was the first feminist I knew about as a young Dublin woman growing up in 80s ireland. Nell and june levine and all the other women who blazed a trail and started an uprising with the contraception train inspired me as a teenager i remember thinking i want to be like that...an agitator a voice for women and children. Nell spoke truth to power and was never afraid to challenge anyone. I hope women in ireland can continue what nell and her counterparts started 🙏 and keep agitating, keep standing up and speaking out. I know i will, and that's the legacy Nell leaves behind, a generation of women who have found a voice because she paved the way.

Rest well now, dear Nell 💜 ❤️ thank you. You never stopped caring x
Thanks Nell for having the courage to say what many of us were thinking. Rest in peace, you've earned it.
No one like you Nell, you were the best and bravest of all of us. You were loved. Night sister rest in peace.
RIP Nell. Thanks for your honesty and integrity. You will not be forgotten.
Sincere sympathy to Carmel and all the McCafferty family.
