Dear Jillian, Rory, Riona and the Furlong family,

I played football with Niall for 13 years. All told, that must have been around 500 matches, indoor and out, in good weather and bad. You learn a lot about yourself and others when you play team sports to that extent.

Niall was the glue that kept our group together over the years. He combined a gentle, amiable manner with quiet determination and toughness. He was calm in the face of more excitable team mates (and ranting goalies), and he was the fairest player you could ever meet. He never had to kick somebody to make his point. It's a term that has gone out of fashion, but Niall was a gentleman in the true sense. Reserved, but friendly and always decent (another hugely undervalued quality).

I hadn't seen Niall for the best part of a decade, but I am very saddened by this terrible news. Sincere condolences to all of his family (and particularly to Keith and Trevor who briefly played in some of those earlier games). All I can say when thinking of my time kicking ball with Niall is I was always very glad when he was on my team - and not the opposition's.

I was very honored to work with Niall. He was nothing short of a true gentleman with an amazing personality, full of life, consistently positive, and simple a joy to talk and work with. I truly admired him and all the interactions we had. My condolences to Jillian, Rory, Ríona and the entire Furlong family.

It is with great sadness that I heard about Niall's passing. My deepest sympathy to Jillian, Rory, Riona, the Furlong, Quilligan, and Britton families. May Niall rest in peace.

I'm really saddened to hear of Nialls passing. He and I got up to all sorts of mischief in our teenage years together. He was so much fun to be around. I regret not making the effort to keep in touch after moving to America. My sympathies to his entire family.
