I only got to know Niall in the past few years when he would come over for a holiday to his home in Athboy and we were neighbours.
I loved to be invited to his and Greets soirées , great chat, great wit and an always positive spin on Ireland, no matter how I complained about Govnt, health etc.
I never heard him complain once and I feel privileged that we had a great evening in my house Jan ‘23 before he went home to Brussels , promising he would be back later in summer to “paint the garden fence”!
That was always his outlook , looking forward….
He is out of his pain now and at peace .
My sympathies to his children and Greet .

I had the privilege of hearing one of Niall's talks to visitors' groups in the EP many years ago. He was both insightful and hilarious. I crossed paths with him many times since then through mutual friends and mutual interests. Everyone wanted him on their team in pub quizzes ;-). He was always so kind and so humble. He was - and remains - an absolute legend! My sincere condolences to his family and many friends.

Only seeing this notice latterly. Wouldn't have recognised Niall by his picture.
We were in the same year from 1971 to 1976.
Niall was an honours student.
He was referred to as 'Twiggy' a term of endearment he acquired in primary school in Ballyraggett.
One got the impression that Niall would do well in life as he was precise and meticulous in everything he set about doing.
From what I've read he certainly had found his correct vocation in the European Parliament.
I was never best buddies with Niall but I remember him as pleasant and never surly and a little bit of a wit.
I personally don't have the happiest of memories of my schooldays- nonetheless its poignant when you hear about the untimely passing of someone who really did something useful in tough environment and managed to leave a legacy where he was popular and proficient in his career!
I will always remember him as a slightly frail chap with reddish auburn hair and a slight cheeky grin.
My condolences to the O'Neill family, his wife and kids!
Ar dheis de gi raibh anam dilis.
Rest easy Niall!
Always wondered where that twang in his accent.
Didn't know he had started primary school in Dundalk!
RIP

Condolences to all the O Neill family both in Ireland and Belgium at this sad time May Niall rest in peace.
Sincere condolences to Niall's family on his passing. Niall was a great colleague in the EP, knew everything there was to know and always had a joke or a funny comment to make. A wonderful character full of Irish charm and wit. May he now rest in peace.
Niall was my superviser for my traineeship when I first arrived in Brussels, and became a lovely friend and steadfast support. He gave me such a positive and supportive introduction to working life.
Just a few of my favourite memories are: our regular sushi nights on Mondays in Strasbourg; coming to my rescue when I got stuck in a basement in the Parliament; tipping me off on the best corridor to stand in when famous faces visited the Parliament - whether it was the Pope or Joe Biden or Hugh Grant; and him being one of the first people to message me after the death of my dad with such thoughtful and kind words.
Sending so much love and strength to Greet, Roisin, Cillian and the whole family.

Greet Róisín Cillian Aisling Malachy Shane Anne Dermot Lorraine and all our lovely cousins. Niall loved big, and laughed heartily with a brightness that will live on in all your memories. I always thought of him busy in the corridors and offices of the EU and then at the end of his day going home to his lovely family, to take joy in the living of his life. Rest easily Niall.
Sincere condolences to Aisling, Dermot and Shane on the very sad loss of your dear brother Niall. To Roisin, Cillian and Greet on the loss of your dear dad and husband. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this very sad time.
I wish to express my deepest condolences to Niall’s family, in particular to Greet, Roisin and Cillian, as well as friends and colleagues, on his passing.
Having had Niall as a colleague in the European Parliament has been a real privilege. He brought clarity and Irish common sense, as well as wittiness and an amazing sense of humour everywhere he worked in. He engraved the importance of professionalism, professional joy, human kindness, fairness and an understanding of correct administration into the hearts of Members and staff alike. He taught us so much of the importance of always looking at the bright side of life. It is going to be very hard to imagine the European Parliament without Niall!
Thank you for everything, dear Niall, R.I.P.

I have had the privilege to know Niall almost as long as I have worked in the European Parliament. He was one of the kindest and funniest colleagues I’ve ever known. He had the rare ability to see the funny side of things. And in his elegant way he always got his point across. He will be missed by many. My deepest condolences to his family.
Niall was one of a kind. Few people can be remembered after their passing with so many smiles and thoughts of good times shared. He exuded kindness, wit and friendliness. We were lucky to have known and worked with him.
Deepest condolences to the O’Neill family on the passing of Niall. He was such a kind and generous man, full of wit, and always the first to know the latest news of every sort. Niall did huge service to Europe and its Parliament, not least in presenting its works with great humour to many groups of visitors. (His talks were a hard act to follow for us less talented speakers). He wore his abundant knowledge lightly, but put it to effective use as a most valued player on our pub quiz team.
Our thoughts are with his family and closest friends.
May his memory be a blessing. Rest In Peace, Niall. You will be sorely missed.

Sincere condolences to Ashling,Dermot and Shane and Niaĺl's family on the passing of Niall. May he rest in peace.
My heartfelt sympathy to Niall's family at this very sad time. Niall was a wonderful colleague in the European Parliament. I know that Irish Journalists and visiting groups, from giddy teenagers to grandparents, always commented on Niall's engaging manner and his knowledge of and insight into the EU issues of the day, information which he delivered with ease and humour. A man who actually during his career, as Kipling wrote, walked with Kings but never lost the common touch. Rest in peace Niall.
Niall and I started our European careers at the same time. He was a gentle giant of a character. From County Down via Brussels to all of you, Niall’s loved ones, my sincerest condolences. Gary

Very sad to hear this news, my deepest condolences to his family. For so many years his was the face of the Parliament to visitors & MEPs who knew instinctively to rely on Niall. He extolled the virtues of the European ideal and represented most of them as well. His humour was always as intelligent as it was politically insightful. He is sadly missed.
A thought to the family of my former head of unit

Niall was a gem. Kind, smart, funny and a fabulous ambassador for Europe and all of us being better together. Rest In Peace.
Niall and I first met in January 1982. We did our stage together at the European Parliament in Luxembourg in early 1982. He has been my best friend ever since. Niall passed away early on Thursday 27 July. We have spent many good times together, and some tough times. We will all miss his incredible wit, his fantastic speeches (including his characterization of the EU institutions as the "holy trinity"!) and his use of humor and impersonation (especially of well-known Irish personalities!) to illustrate the politics of our era. Niall's explanations of the functioning of the European Parliament and EU institutions became legendary. He had a conviction and passion for the European project and a unique sense of humour and fun with which to explain it. He addressed thousands of visitors to the European Parliament - from visitors groups to Heads of State and Government - across Europe he will be remembered as the erudite, brilliant and witty Irishman that helped make sense of the European Union for all. And more recently he also ensured the Parliament was open and safe. Jo Wood, Nicolas and Toni and my thoughts are with Niall's family and especially with Greet, Roisin and Cillian.
I was saddened to read the news of Niall's passing. That accent. Was for sure unique in the corridors in Brussels. Niall was just the best of craic. It was written on his face. His humour and wisdom would have brightened anyone's day. He will be missed at work in the European Parliament. May he rest in peace.
Sincere sympathy to Aisling Shane and Dermot and Nialls Belgium Family on his passing. We have the fondest memories of all the O Neill family for the last 55 years.May heaven be his bed.
