Thinking of you lots Nicholas. It wasn't long ago that we were causing mischief around the grounds of Clonabreany House, kicking balls over bridges, throwing rocks in ponds and chasing away the birds. I’ll miss your cheeky laugh, big hugs and you roughing up my hair. You made us all feel very loved.

Great memories of Nicholas calling to super valu Oldcastle with Larry where he’d get excited knowing he was going to enjoy a 99 or a coke which was his treat whenever he came. In particular on one occasion when we all went for a meal in the Ceili House. We had ordered our meals and some drinks (Coke) for Nicholas, Myself and Larry were chatting away and when Nicholas ran out of drink, he brought his empty glass up to the barman and managed to sneakily get him to refill it. He came back to the table with the biggest grin ever. This was a big win for Nicholas, he loved to get these special extra treats and it meant the world to him. We could see how delighted he was to have out smarted the two of us .

One summer's day I went to SuperValu Kells where I traditionally met Larry for a chat. In I go and there is Nicholas, larger than life. My greeting was always a couple of firm taps on the top of my head followed by the warmest hug in Kells. He then announced “Me Hit”. I looked up at Larry and asked if I could take Nicholas to the driving range in Navan to “Hit”. “No bother” I was told and Nicholas and I hit the road. On the bypass, coming into Navan, the quiet man next to me says “Me there”. I look around and see Smyths Toy Store and I give him his father’s hand gesture which meant “No, we’re not going there today!”.
We arrived at the driving range and I rented balls and we both began to hit. Nicholas could hit balls like they were flying out of a machine gun. Right or left handed, one hand or both hands. His hand eye coordination was incredible. When Nicholas ran out of balls, mine were fair game. After we’d run out of balls I explained to Nicholas there was no money to get more, we headed back to Kells, avoiding Smyths this time! We met Larry in SuperValu and Nicholas said to him, “Damie me hit”.
I am truly thankful to the O’Brien family for letting me have this time with my friend Nicholas. A man who saw every day as a good day! He has made all our lives better for knowing him.
