Condolences to Eileen and daughters Anne-Marie, Edel, Orla and Niamh. It was rewarding to attend Uncle Nicholas's funeral mass and listen to the elequent eulogy delivered by Anne-Marie surrounded by her sisters. They certainly captured his geniality and good humor.
I was reminded of the Nicholas I knew as a child in Anner Rd. and later in the School House, where he stayed with bother John Joe and family, when he first came to Dublin. To me he was a young, "cool" uncle who made a fuss of me and made me feel special. He encouraged a sense of curiosity and helped broaden my interests. I fondly recall his numerous thoughtful gifts, especially the fascinating world globe (no one else had one!) and the Brownie 125 camera (no one else had one!!).
Anne-Marie mentioned that Nicholas originally wanted to be a teacher. He would surely have made a good one; he definitely planted a desire for learning in me.
It is clear from Anne-Marie's oration that Nicholas has left his family with an amazing heritage of love for art, the environment and culture. Through that legacy he will be forever with them.
