Kathryn
So so sorry to hear of the death of your dear Nick. I think of you both as I try to progress my running. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis
Our wonderful sport of athletics continually throws up individuals who have the ability and desire to make a difference. This was a phrase Nick used quite often, challenging people to get involved and work for Irish athletics.

Nick certainly made a difference over many decades and was President of Irish Athletics when his particular attributes were most needed. How could the fledgling Athletics Ireland have survived without Nick's twin skills of determination and diplomacy?

But Nick was equally effective at the grass roots and in addition to his involvement with Liffey Valley Athletic Club, found time to work at all Dublin fixtures. Probably his favourite events were the graded track and field series in which he was deeply involved and championed for some 50 years, and was planning them right up to the time he fell ill. Countless athletes benefited from his efforts and our club, Dublin City Harriers, for one owes Nick a huge debt of gratitude.

Athletics will miss this man who shared many gifts with us. He shared his athletic knowledge, his administrative capabilities, his coaching prowess and his love of our sport. Most of all he shared his precious gift of time.
I am thinking of Kathryn and Nick at this most difficult time and the great friendship shared between both our families through athletics.

May God bless you all, until you meet again.

Best wishes,
Brian, Miriam and children.
Sincere condolences to Kathryn, Fiona, Eoin, Colm, his brother Jimmy and all the extended family.
I turned up to LVAC as a total beginner with no previous experience in athletics. Nick invested so much time, effort and energy into each individual in the club regardless of their ability. I will never forget the encouragement Nick gave me. Not only was he a running coach but he was almost like a life coach as well. He always had such wise words and an abundance of knowledge to share. I still remember his mantra " fail to prepare, prepare to fail". Nick has definitely prepared well for a bed in heaven by always showing such kindness and respect to others and leading such an exemplary life on this earth.
Nick was an absolute gentleman and he and his family can be extremely proud of all his achievements. I feel privileged to have known him.
May his gentle soul rest in peace.

I am so sorry that Nick has passed, and I offer my deepest condolences to Kathryn, Fiona, Colm, Eoin, Jim, Jean and all his treasured family. You gave him a most beautiful send off yesterday which he would have been so proud of.

I joined Liffey Valley AC in 2013 and was coached by Nick until in or around 2021. Nick was a most respectful coach with so much wisdom, and a dry wit that made you want to get the best out of yourself and earn that little bit of praise for your efforts which would sing in your mind in races to come - only given when warranted; you knew you had earned it! My abiding memory of Nick will be him in his waterproof gear at the top of the Kyber pass with his stopwatch on a wet Winter’s night. He was a steady presence in all weathers and indeed seemed to thrive in tough conditions, instilling that grit and passion into us all.

I am immensely grateful that I met Nick and was coached by him for so many years. May you rest in peace Nick, and may you know how much you were appreciated, and what an indelible mark you left on so many of us, that we will always remember and treasure.
