My heartfelt sympathy to Carmel, Susan, Shauna, Jimmy, Nick, Noel, Enda, and all the extended Callan family.

I will never forget Nicky, and I will remember him with great fondness. Nicky acted as my godparent on the day of my baptism, which took place on Sunday, 20th May 1984; the very same day that Meath beat Monaghan by 0-10 to 0-08 in the Centenary Cup final at Croke Park. My father, Gerry, and Nicky couldn’t make the match that afternoon, but true to form, they didn’t let it stop them; they drove straight to Navan after the christening to celebrate Meath’s victory in style with the team and supporters alike. That story has always been part of our family folklore, and it says a lot about the humour and character that Nicky brought wherever he went.

For as long as I can remember, when going to GAA football matches with my father, Gerry — and right up to the present day — I would always be instructed by Gerry to buy two match programs at the ground: one for Gerry, and one to bring home to Nicky. The following week after the match, it became my job to deliver the program to Nicky at the shop, or to cycle out to the family home at Greenan and deliver it there. I may no longer buy GAA match programs for Nicky, but I will always think of him whenever I have one in my hand.

A great neighbour, a great Meath man, and above all, a great friend to our family. Nicky will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
