It was my pleasure and privilege to know Noel over many years. We worked together from 1986, during which time he became a great friend. In that first year his beloved wife passed away. Despite his intense heartache I watched him rally to focus on his three children, he loved his family dearly and was a very proud father and grandfather.
Noel was a loving, caring man with a big personality, he had a constant curiosity about others and a wicked sense of humour. No matter what the situation he never hesitated to jump in to advise or help when needed. Always reliable he was a great man to have on your side when in a bind, and he seemed afraid of nothing. I remember when he fell off his roof, he was up there fixing something despite being in his 80s! I told him off for being reckless as no doubt did everyone else, but his only concern, more of an observation with a chuckle really, was that he thought his heart had shifted over a bit.
He was a great favourite with my children, regaling them with tales of his early days in Dublin, his travels through Europe on his motorbike, and also listening to them in return. Not many people listen these days...he was genuinely interested in other people's lives and was an excellent listener.
I will miss you dear Noel, we all will, you were a great friend with a big heart. My sincere condolences to Daragh, Breffini, Gavin and all the family. With love,
Maria O'Cleirigh

Noel picked me up from school every day for years. He always showed us pictures of his grand kids he was so proud of. He would keep new tins of sweets for us in the glove compartment. He was so loving and chatted to me and my sister about our days in school. It was so wonderful having someone so happy to meet us everyday. He was a wonderful man and kept visiting me into my 20's. We would sit and have a cup of tea and talk about our lives. He was a wonderful man. My deepest condolences to his family. He was such a lovely man.
I knew Noel as a young lad, he would pick me up from school and I would see him from time to time, but it was years later when I was 25 that I became genuinely good friends with him. He would come into the office where we worked and we would go get lunch, chatting about all sorts of stuff. We'd do that 2-3 times a week, and for about 4 years until I moved to the US I counted him a close friend, even though there was more than 50 years between us at that point I think.
I moved to the US and would see him when I visited Ireland, once or twice a year, and when I got married I had the pleasure of introducing my wife to him at lunch one day.
That was the last time I saw Noel but I've thought about him many times since. What a great gentleman and interesting conversationalist. I'll remember him fondly.
Rest in peace, Noel.
