A Poem to Gran
That evening autumnal sunhine descends on St Assam’s avenue, lighting a sacred passage through time. The comfort of knowing she’ll be arriving at 6pm, never late, i prepare the football & history discussions and always that glass of sherry.
Sitting in the back of her old car with content, as she takes us on an adventure to Ron’s cafe, her eagerness to hear about all our childhood days, a bond that you only get with a loving Gran, a memory that never fades.
The Strawberry fair on a balm summers day, I can see by her smile some games bring her back to her childhood, whilst in her garden we get lost amongst the apple blossoms, content that she is never too far away.
At 567 the luftwaffe bombs are falling nearby, through the commotion her baby brother sleeps right through, a determined town carries on, children play hop scotch on the street as cattle go by.
Steady on to the ocean she strolls, holding her sisters hand as far as dollymount strand, Howth embraces her from a distance, as summers in skerries & jersey reflect in her eyes, the waves breaking with ease, under the July Dublin sky.

Fiona, I am sorry for your sad loss, coming so close to your mother's centenary.
I'm very sorry to hear of Mrs Traynor's passing. She was a gentle, elegant lady and I very much enjoyed our chats when she was out walking with Nessa on St Assam's Ave. May she rest in peace.
