I was very sorry to hear the news of Noreen’s passing. She was always so kind to us as children, taking a genuine interest in what we were up to. She shared a wonderful bond of friendship with Eileen (our mum), and I have fond memories of our holidays camping on the Aran Islands, as well as fishing and pony-riding in Moylett with the Clarkes.

I heard the sad news about your wonderful mum. She was a very likeable, generous and smart woman. We have been sharing some stories from the Aran Island trip we all did when we were 10 or 12, the times down at Moylett with your grandad, weekends away in Kells, the first time I ever had Pizza when you all lived in Booterstown/Blackrock. It was a Friday night treat ( and many more times). I am sorry I did not get to see her so much in the last number of years, I will always remember her as Aunty Noreen. Poem for Noreen

We are hovering, you and I
under an evening sky
as it darkens, each gleaming turns to diamond stud star.
Do you want to stay here a while
or go home , where everyone awaits,
begin the party that will go long into the night?

Or shall we visit the theatre once more, or would it be a bore , badly acted or just rubbish, neither one thing nor t’other?
Perhaps wander the Spanish streets
where the mantillas throw laced shapes
upon the wall and playful fight starts between son and mother.

Shall we sally through your garden
wild sides of only slightly tamed beds
and field of forget me knots to
talk of human nature and the relative history of the strange plants in revolutionary plots.

We could be observant and get mass, midnight preferably,
the lintel and lumen,
of power when old meets new
pass over the traditional modern
the small sacrifice of an hour
of eucharistic discipline.

Be slow to fast, you have no need
but if you are not hungry for a feed
perhaps some tea, a night cap,
we will wake you
or whatever you'll have,
the paper or a nap
a story for the road...

and before you sleep
in calculated divilment
you can sort us out,
tell us what's what
shout in whispers quietly
your prized ,eternal victory,
the last laugh.
