Ms Autumn's eyes are closing
The Shiraz had you sneezing
When you wake you'll say 'that was a great film', though I'm sure I heard you snoring

I take out the teabag
You take prayer cards from your handbag
I pray I look as good as you, glowing in your gladrags

Brandy for the shock
Your'e Forever,
You're a rock on Arklow beach
Becoming one with the sky and the sea.

VERSION OF A POEM WRITTEN FOR NOREEN ON A BIG BIRTHDAY BY HER GRANDCHILDREN
Our Nana

She’s the oldest person
That Jake and Georgia know,
But they think she could be 50,
Because she’s always on the go.
With all her bridge and card games,
And her travels galore,
Her lovely hair always neatly set
As she’s running out the door.
She likes sitting down with Ellen
After gardening in her yard,
Sharing stories from the Royal Hotel
Usually ending with ‘You’re barred!’
She’s always looking out for us,
And treats us all so well,
Like minding Ian when he was small,
And there are other stories to tell.
Whether it’s throwing cushions at Cathal
So he’d be a goalie to be feared,
Or telling Padraig he looked homeless
When he tried to grow a beard,
Or letting Cian sit in the armchair
While her favourite soaps were on,
Or saving Catherine an extra spud
Before all the crispy ones were gone.
Our Nana takes no nonsense,
But sometimes she’s like a big kid,
She went to Disney with Ciara and Darragh
And went on more rides than they did!
Luda and VJ adore her cooking,
Her roast dinners are famous across the land,
But we don’t just love her because she feeds us
(although if she wants to, that’s grand)
We love her because she’s caring,
She’s generous and she’s kind,
If any of us grow up to be like her
We certainly wouldn’t mind.
So on your big birthday Nana,
Your grandkids want to say,
We know we’re so lucky to have you
And you’re special in every way.
