After hearing Olcán's music for the first time, we came back several times to Westport to hear him again and eventually became friends. His attention and kindness made everyone feel at home. We had wonderful times, playing and singing with him. His playing, with such mastery it felt natural and evocative, his keen eye to capture Ireland's beauty, the stories he would share, all this will be dearly remembered.

Later, I visited him in Westport and saw him many times on other visits there. It was an honor to get to know and play music with him. Such a BEAUTIFUL Couple, kind and genuine people. Olcán was always so happy and nothing ever seemed to be a problem. I loved listening to him playing his instruments, so naturally talented, an AMAZING Musician. It is many years ago since those days in Kilmeena but since then I always enjoyed bumping into Olcán in Westport on my trips home, the little chats and the memories. Dear Shari, my condolences to you and your family. I will remember Olcan as a gifted and passionated musician, storyteller and generous host. He always was a great companion during the few trips we made. He had a great repertoire but 'the lonesome boatman' was my favourite. I wish you and your family a lot of strength tomorrow. Had the pleasure of listening to him giving the history of Aughagower during the UNESCO adjudication last year and he blew us all away with his knowledge and passion for the area. Olcan was a joy for my photographers on tour in Ireland several years ago. He was our driver and guide. Of course he knew everyone along the way and played his flutes for us in the most amazing and lonely ruins. It was magical. We loved watching him play at night in the local pub in Westport. I am so sorry to hear this news. He was an icon that you think is always going to be around. My love condolences go out to Shari who opened their home to us for a visit. May he rest in peace. I for one, will never forget him.

We still haven’t quite recovered from that horrible moment went Catherine came over in tears to tell us the dreadful news. it was so unpredictable. It is always sad to lose someone I truly admired and still admire for being a true patriot and son of Ireland with a heart of gold. We always enjoyed his company when he came over to visit Catherine and Derek. Catherine has been blessed with two outstanding brothers, which makes it all the more difficult to come to terms with the grief. We shall give her and Derek all our support. We would like to thank Olcàn and Shari again for their lovely and most original gifts that were greatly appreciated and a sure sign of their legendary generosity.

We shall definitely stream the mass on Monday lunchtime to share our prayers and utter sadness with many others over this irreparable loss.

Olcan was one of the kindest and sweetest people I've ever known. He made a deep and lasting impression on me––as he did with everyone he met. His gentle spirit and amazing musical talent will live on in the memories of so many. My deepest condolences to Shari and his family.

I first met and then played with Olcán many times when I lived in Westport, and subsequently discovered that he was the composer of the Convenience reel (one of my favourites), originally conceived under a different name about a bar in Dundalk which required a special knock to enter, the rhythm of which is inherent in the tune. These nuances are the nuggets of wisdom passed from one generation to another, and I hope it brings his family comfort to know that aside from his performance energy, his music itself will continue to live on and have a special memory every time we play, for the story and the man at it's source.

Olcán was ever generous to me with his time, music, and support. I am thankful for my good fortune to have known him, and will be sure to raise a glass on Sunday at the fleadh cheoil in Wexford. Hup!

We will always remember Olcán’s time in San Antonio. Especially when he graciously played at our wedding to the delight of all. We all enjoyed his company and dancing to his music.

Olcán you will be missed by many.
