Oliver Ryan

It is with deep sorrow that I learned of Oliver’s passing. He was, and remains, a legend from his days at UCG—an inspiring figure whose influence rippled far beyond the classroom. As a role model to countless aspiring educators, Oliver combined wisdom with wit, offering guidance that was both profound and refreshingly humorous.

His unconventional thinking opened doors for many of us, encouraging bold choices and new paths in teaching. For me and a few others, that meant venturing to Malawi in the mid-eighties to apply our newly acquired skills—armed with enthusiasm, idealism, and, in Oliver’s spirit, a very large fishing pole. Oliver’s legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the adventures he inspired. He will be deeply missed. May he rest in peace.

Colette and I remember Oliver with great affection and memories from the moments we shared together with you both at the ISTA conferences over the years. We really enjoyed his stories and looked forward to them and your company as he presented the Science Educator of the Year Awards

Our sincere condolences to all of Oliver’s family and friends on your very sad loss. Oliver was (and is) a legend here in the School of Education at the University of Galway. He taught on the HDipEd when I completed it in the 90s and was very popular. He was just retiring when I started as a member of staff. He was very much ahead of his time, setting up international alliances and projects, and advocating for and supporting women in STEM way back in the day. There are many, many Science teachers - and, therefore, indirectly, generations of school pupils - who benefited from his passion, innovative pedagogies, and focused support. He will long be remembered here in the School of Education and University more widely.

So sorry to read that Oliver has died, sincere sympathies to his family. A teacher to his bones, he could talk for Ireland and charmed all his students with his sincere belief that teaching was the best job in the world! I met him about ten year back and he spoke so fondly of his time at the university and his much loved grandsons.

Greatly saddened to learn of Oliver's death.

He was a wonderful man, warm and witty, and above all, a very wise mentor, who was an incredibly encouraging, generous and supportive colleague, a terrific boss when I worked with him on the TEMPUS and TACIS programmes, an absolute gentleman, and a raconteur without equal.

It was an enormous privilege to have known him, learned from him, and worked with him.

Our sincere sympathy to Jackie and extended family. We got to know Oliver through his involvement with St Joseph’s Parish travel club. He was instrumental in helping organise some of our most interesting holidays to Eastern Europe among other locations. He was unflappably and could sort any tricky situation with ease and diplomacy. As we are away, we cannot attend the funeral Mass May he rest in peace.

It is with great sadness that I have learned that Oliver has passed to his eternal reward. Oliver was a giant in science education at national and international level. His commitment to his students and to the Irish Science Teachers' Association knew no bounds. I first met Oliver at the beginning of my career as a science teacher and I will never forget the enormous help and wise advice that he gave me down through the years. He had great vision and was ahead of his time in science pedagogy with innovations in the use of AV technology in teaching science and establishing links between the Irish Science Teachers' Association and science education organisations at international level. He was a kind, gentle and humble man with a great sense of humour. He will be greatly missed by all of us in the science education community.
