It was with deepest sympathy ,that we learnt of Owens passing today.Sunday.
Owen was a Gentle and very kind man who I loved to go and see when I went to my Grandparents Annie and Michael Devine..in my childhood and Adulthood.
He always had great time to tell me stories of my Dad Denis his brothers Seamus and Vincent .
All these men with Owen are greatly missed by us all .

Owen Daly was at heart a country squire, his sensibilities redolent of a bygone era when good manners, refinement and modesty were the mark of a true gentleman.
I served with Owen on the short-lived Abbey-Duniry Historical Society in 2007, the last meeting of which was held in the parlour of his home. I can still see him at his beautiful mahogany table, dressed in a fine tweed jacket, white cotton shirt, set off by a dashing silk cravat. The table was laden with exquisite china and silverware, cakes and biscuits.
Owen was a cultured man, a man of erudition, who saw land not as a vulgar utilitarian possession but as a beloved communal landscape of history and folklore.He could recount in his soft refined voice local stories about the ancient MacEagan school of Brehon law, for example; the route of Sarsfield’s sad retreat after the battle of Aughrim in 1691; or The Peeler, shot during the War of Independence, whose haunted figure is still seen walking the road from the bridge near Finnerty’s Mill to the top of the picturesque little village of Limehill. It was said that Owen often stood up in Harney’s pub in Loughrea where he could recite from memory the long epic poem, The Long Black Hand, about a hand that rose in revenge from a graveyard near Kilchreest that terrified all who passed by from dusk to dawn.
We have lost a keeper of the culture and may Owen now rest in peace. My condolences to Owen’s sisters Carmel and Rose; his niece and nephew and niece in law.
