I was deeply saddened to hear of Paddy's passing and offer my condolences to Bernadette and the rest of the family. Paddy was a fantastic mentor when I moved to Ireland from Canada and worked with him at the Irish Sun and I deeply regret not seeing him again before I moved back. He will be missed by many.

Was Paddy the best newsman of his generation? Probably. He was certainly the most versatile. When you spotted that distinctive rolling gait, battered black satchel swinging from the shoulder, you knew you were on a big story and had to be at your best. From the joyous World Cup shenanigans in Palermo in 1990 to the most heartbreaking stories over more than half a century Paddy brought insatiable curiosity, intelligence, wit and journalistic rigour. There was also a humanity and decency in his work. He understood no-one is perfect and that was reflected in crisp, incisive reportage always tempered with humanity and understanding. He was also a charmer, great company and so kind to younger colleagues. He will be sadly missed. I'm so glad we had one last epic day out in Lissadell a few short years ago when Constance and Eddie threw open the wine cellar one fine Summer evening and Paddy was at his irrepressible best reflecting on a life well lived
