I have just read about Paddy's death.My sincere condolences to Bernie and family.A larger than life person who always had a story and smile. May he Rest In Peace.

So sorry to learn of Paddy’s passing.

He gave me my first start on a national when he hired me for The Irish Sun in 2001 – something for which I will always be grateful, and he was a great mentor – not just teaching how to write tightly but also in advising how to approach interviews and doorsteps.

Yes, he wasn’t shy about letting you know when you didn’t deliver, but equally he would praise you when you came up with the goods and behind the hardened hack exterior, he had a great core of decency as well as a great sense of humour.

Great credit to Tara for her fine eulogy where she painted such an evocative picture of growing up with a reporter father in the house – he was a newsman to his fingertips, and you could almost hear the typewriter clacking in the background as she described home life.

He was the unpaid tutor to a whole generation of journalists. Paddy was the guy who made the words sing....vividly recording the ups and downs of everyday life, objectively and sympathetically. He set a very high bar for the rest of us in the profession. May he rest in peace.

While I knew of Paddy and his work as a journalist for many years I only got to meet him in recent years and he was one of those people who on first meeting, you are drawn to his sincerity, kindness and humility. One of the very best. He was my News Editor at Century Radio and I use what I learned from him every day I’m on the job. The quintessential journalist, he had a breadth of knowledge across all disciplines. His legacy will live on in all journalists lucky enough to have worked with him.
