A Poem for Grandad

We remember a quiet and solemn man on this day,
Come hail, rain or shine, a farmer who always made hay.
Big and strong and always kind hearted,
We treasure the time we had with you, our dearly departed.
A lover of Sport, never missed a puck out,
Even when Wexford winning was often in doubt.
Leg going 90, clove drops a plenty,
Didn’t matter who won, as long as it wasn’t Kilkenny.
Tales of Leo, the messer, head covered in hosiery,
A swift elbow and a scold in the middle of the rosary.
Pretending to be angry and trying not to laugh,
Before running to the yard to deliver yet another calf.
A father, a grandad, a husband to Nana Peggy,
Creating a homestead, a place to fill your heart and your belly.
We’ll always remember walking through the fields with Captain by your side,
Listening to our accomplishments, forever beaming with pride.
Alas it’s now time for us to say Goodbye,
Now that you’ve found your final resting place in the sky.
Say hi to Nana Peggy, Leo and all those we once knew,
They are the lucky ones, now they have you…
