It was with deep sadness that I learned today of the demise of Paddy, for whom I had the highest regard. I found that as Managing Director of Bord na Mona Paddy exhibited kindness, intelligence in difficult circumstances, and an absolute willingness and ability to take concise action when nescessary. My direct dealings with him in relation to the company were honest and forthcoming, and even after his retirement I felt that somehow he always held the managerial reins. In that office I felt he was the equal of most other people who held the position, and can only laud many decisions he made. His absolute love of golf and the GAA brought him very close to many of the company's employees, to whom he delivered a faithful service. Paddy was the last of the great Bord na Móna MDs, he will be remembered always as such -Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

To Sadie, Majella, Conor, Paddy, Cathal and wider family. Our sincerest condolences on the passing of the wonderful man that was Paddy Hughes. We are so sorry that we couldn't be with you at this sad time. Paddy really combined all the best elements of what it takes to be a great Irishman, loyalty, love, professionalism, leadership, humour and pride in his roots. His humour stood out to me when I was making my best man's speech at Paddy Jnr's wedding. With my notes numbered in perfect order below me as I began speaking, Paddy leaned in as I was addressing the crowd and messed up the chronology of my address. As I panicked momentarily, Paddy sat back in his chair giggling at my stressed state. A classic moment which I have always loved despite my short term angst. Wishing you all strength in the coming weeks and months in what is a tremendous loss but knowing that the legacy of his resilience and character will help you all live on in his image.
