Padraic (Patrick) Beatty

I am one of Padraic (Patrick) Beatty’s many friends in Kilburn, London, distressed and deeply saddened by Patrick’s passing. He spent much of the day in Chatsworth Road, catching up with people, working hard as a gardener and helping out with odd jobs. I met him when he kindly volunteered to carry a heavy package for me, and we gradually became good friends. He was kind, honest, trustworthy and generous to a fault. Once he considered someone a friend, he refused to take payment for any work. I resorted to taking him out for fish and chips and a pint, and insisting on paying! I learnt a lot about gardening, his upbringing on Inis Mor, and about his family (especially his kind nephews). I got to borrow garden equipment, and Patrick gave me a ladder, wheelbarrow and an electric saw, along with a bottle of wine he insisted he’d “won in a raffle”. Once he finished his garden work, we’d sit in the sun and enjoy strong tea and biscuits. That’s how I’ll remember my dear friend, sitting on the patio enjoying his brew. Patrick wasn’t great with his mobile phone, so when I recently failed to spot him in the street I just assumed he was in Ireland. Then I was away again. When he still wasn’t around I became really worried and posted a message online on NextDoor. Almost immediately I was told of his passing, and dissolved into tears. I feel awful that I didn’t visit him in hospital and never got to say goodbye. I shall so miss my dear, lovely Patrick.
