The word that best describes him, in my experience, is 'original'. He had little time for trite, second-hand opinions: everything was questioned and usually found wanting. He had this extraordinary confidence and independence of mind that enabled him always to steer a straight course. He was a man of many exceptional talents, for instance, being adept at playing several musical instruments, a skill that won him a number of Oireachtas prizes in early manhood. While he would never approve of the outworn phrase, this one is so appropriate that it could have been first said of Paschal himself: Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann.

I have so many fond memories of Paschal, especially the times he spent with Caitlin Hannah playing Scrabble. His knowledge and the stories he shared always captivated me - I truly loved listening to his experiences. He had such a gift for making conversations meaningful and memorable.

I treasure the time I spent living with you during my years at UL. Paschal’s love and care for you were always so evident. His warmth, wisdom, and generosity left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him, and his absence will be deeply felt. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis!

I met Paschal when he was working at UL, and in a book club. He was a knowledgeable and witty colleague at work and an always well-prepared and enthusiastic reader in the book club, with trenchant, well-argued opinions. Suimneas síorraí dó.

Pascal had a brilliant way with the English language and was extremely talented at anything he undertook. I am so sad to see Pascal is gone, and I will miss him. Rest in Peace.

My condolences to Pascal’s family on his passing. As a European Studies student in what was then NIHE Limerick in the early 80s I was lucky to have Pascal as a lecturer for Anthropology. He had at times a deeply cynical perspective on the world but was a hugely fascinating and engaging individual and constantly encouraged us to always question and challenge issues and opinions.

My main memory of him was a trip he organised in early December 1980 for a group of us to spend a weekend at Magee College in Derry. It was that very fraught period between the two major Republican hunger strikes and the city was tense and as a group of Southerners we stuck out. Notwithstanding these tensions Pascal managed to arrange for us to meet a number of local Republicans in various pubs in the Bogside to get a firsthand perspective on life for the Catholic community. It was an engaging and very informative experience for us all.
