Pat Cooney

Sincere condolences to the extended Cooney family on the sad passing of Pat. An honorable and steadfast leader in our country when it was most needed. His legacy is one of honour and service, with no anticipation of personal reward or glory, I'd surmise. May he rest in eternal peace.

Very sorry to hear of Pat’s recent passing. I first met him when he was Minister for Defence in early 1985
and I was appointed Secretary of that Department. We got a lot done and would have achieved more if
we had not been moved to other responsibilities. He was very courageous and always great company.
We used to meet for lunch from time to time, in more recent times in Dun Laoghaire,where we would
discuss and solve all the problems of the world ! I will miss those get-togethers. My deepest sympathy
to all the family.

Mark I am so sorry to hear this belated sad news of your Beloved Dads passing- I have such happy memories of chatting with him regularly in our days in Castleknock and his enquiries as to your well being- in later life I was fortunate enough to meet him on many occasions- the Cooney Donegan Cosgrave treble was some group of Winners- sincerest condolences to all your family-May Paddy rest in peace

Belatedly informed, I send all my condolences to Mark Cooney , and the Cooney family.
We sat together with Pat in the European Parliament, and this was a great help at the start of the twinning between Athlone and Châteaubriant,of which I was Mayor at the time...I have lovely memories of friendly stays at the Cooneys' - and happily the twinning is still thriving.
Thank you, Pat,for your commitment for Europe...and friendship.

RIP Paddy. A great neighbour, public servant and statesman. Of great humour and civility. He will be missed by all who knew him, from all political persuasions and none.

As a long term political adversary of Pat's I always admired his political acumen. I enjoyed his sparkling company at the regular dinners hosted by The Old Athlone Society. Fine Gael and the country has lost political 'big beast'.

Was hitching out of Dublin at Newlands Cross one day in the early 1980's. A large black car pulled up to give me a lift. Who was it but Paddy Cooney and his Garda driver. Gave me a lift all the way home. Paddy Cooney had a distinguished no nonsense air about him. Always felt grateful to him and his Garda driver. Deepest sympathies to his family.

It with great sadness to learn of Passing of Paddy Cooney one of our greatest Fine Gael politicians of his time with regard to justice and peace in the defence of the nation against the subversive influence within the State during his time in Government.Sincere sympathy to Mark and Michael and all of the Cooney family at this time.
Remembering Paddy as a man of the highest of integrity within political life, and indeed one of the most resilient politicians in the Government of his day in pursuit of the safety of the citizens of this country during the dark days of the 60’s and 70’s. His command of the English language and law and his articulate methods and objectives during his many political debates made were lasting impressions, The great interviews by some of our leading journalists of all time in the 60’s /70’s/ such as the late great Brian Farrell and David Thornley and Ted Nealon of the 7 Day’s team were impressive memories on how politicians should conduct themselves in public life.
On a nostalgic note, my father and uncle were fine Gael People to the core stemming from the War of Independence and were Fine Gael canvass organisers on both sides of the Bridge when Paddy first entered Politics. I remember being sent out on dark nights as a youngster
( no mobile phones then) during election times “ To see was “Cooney’s Car “ in the locality and writing the envelopes to drop into letterboxes.
