Pat Howley

Pat Howley taught me maths and computing in St Mary's college in the early 90s. What a thorough gentleman. He was a very pensive, considerate teacher for whom no question was 'stupid' and was thus revered by his students. He always had a few minutes for you if you met him outside of the classroom setting; lessons that were much more important than the subject material. An example for other men to follow. My sincere condolences to his family and may he rest in peace.

I was on the stage in Mary's recently and got to thinking about Pat and the times we spent up on those boards watching him advise, coax and cajole wonderful performances out of students who were so far out of their comfort zones! A wonderful colleague and a special man. Now that his story has finally come to an end I can truly say it was an honour. He certainly did not leave to the sound of his own footsteps. My condolences to Mary and your family. RIP Pat.

I was lucky to have had Pat as a teacher in St. Mary's in the nineties. I recall looking forward to his Honours Maths class despite being completely lost. He was a pioneering teacher, and I have very fond memories. I am fortunate that I was taught not only by him, but also by his equally inspiring wife Mary in Oranmore. My deepest sympathy to you Mary and family. Pat was a true gentleman. May he rest in peace.

My condolences to Mary,Mary Freada,Breaga on Pats, passing up. A gentleman. I was in Marys in 77/78, repeating LC, as a boarder and Pat
was a nice man to meet. To, his brothers, John,Michael and extended
family, my sympathies, too. Loyalty, is a big gift, to past, present, future.
He was, Loyal to Teaching and its influence. The love of maths, IT, computers is a Howley, trademark and it is fitting that Enda, now heads
up same Dept. in NUIG. John, taught my son, Sean in Oran, for 4 years and
he was , a gentle bird feeder, damn good and kind.
Not, a Yeats money driven grind school, driven by profit. A CAO, system
that has been, the Dirty tail of 2 nd level educ and money. for too long, largely due to the new
confert at 82 called Prof.Aine Hyland. UCC. Aiden Moran, his neighbour,
(Mayo), an early statician, presented , Mr. Duggan, Annaghdown, his
honory degree for setting up, the CAO. Small country, but big people,
like Davitt, Collins,Cosgrave and perhaps Varadkar. May Pat RIP, with
Family like other good souls buried, this week , Dr.Tony Claffey, Mr. M.O Toole, Renmore. Eulogies, are abused by shallow people of of low IQ and
vanity. The, Brendan option, was my boss, SJC.

To know Pat was a privilege.

Pat often spoke of Mary Freda and Brega in the lessons I had with him, with palpable pride and love. I don't think anyone could know him without knowing the deep love he had for his family.

Pat no doubt left an impact on every person lucky enough to be taught by him, and those who knew him at all. His wit, empathy, intelligence, humour and his own passion for learning will be remembered widely.

So very sorry to hear about the passing of Pat. I only really knew him from school but he was a gentleman of great regard and was able to wax lyrical about any subject with great enthusiasm. Very interesting man who had great time for all his students. I remember at times asking a few questions at the end of class, not necessarily about the subject material itself, but about something he may have mentioned, and unlike other teachers, he would keep explaining or go into great detail even while the next class were in the door and getting seated. I'm sure his friends and family who knew him well enough have great memories of him, but for the few years he was a teacher of mine he left a lasting impression of what a man in education should be. May he Rest in Peace and my condolences to you all.

I hope you appreciate the lives this teacher shaped through his lifelong love of teaching. Computers were a wonder he brought into our lives in the late 80s and early 90s. His patience in class legendary. A true gentleman; few, if any, were admired more.

Musicals were huge in Mary's then, and he was at the heart of that.

Even though I had him as a teacher for one term only, in subsequent years, whenever I would meet him along the corridors of the school, he would always greet me warmly and have a chat. I was lucky enough to be a pupil of both Mary and Pat growing up. Such a lovely man. Played no small part in introducing me to computing which later became my career. He was a blessing to all who knew him. My most sincere sympathies to his family and regret that I'm only hearing this sad news now and couldn't come to pay my respects in person.

Mary Freda, Mary and Brega, I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your lovely father Pat. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. What a send off you gave him with the Dunmore Choir! Galway Bay brought a tear to my eye as I imaged Pat looking out over the bay at sunset. I'm sure he loved it. So sorry I could not make it in person. Neasa Donnellan
