Anne and family. Please accept my deepest sympathies on the recent passing of Pat. Always a true gentleman and a great Labour spokesperson. I remember his incisive reference on TV on the forming of a FF led Government and comparing Bertie’s coalition to a NASA rocket and if one piece falls of it stills keeps flying and the same for a second piece - really captured the moment. May he rest in peace.

Anne and Family, very sad to hear of Pats passing. He has left a great legacy of practical idealism. As Labour Party National Organiser he was great to work with in my role as Western Organiser. Unfortunately I could not be at funeral due to illness.

He was a good friend to the Cork Anti Poverty Resources Network, especially in the earlier years as he negotiated for funds for our work with the late Frank Cluskey. I first met Pat back in the  90s, when with Ruairi Quinn, he promoted the new Dublin Docklands Development Authority. Pat was intelligent, articulate, agile, and inventive and hugely supportive of the project, believing in the core objectives of physical, social and economic regeneration encapsulated in the now over 5000 students blossoming in NCI and the thousands working and living in not only “high end” but social and affordable housing on both sides of the then derelict Liffey Quays. His interest and concern for access, education and opportunity in the deprived communities was palpable and hugely successful. For the years that I worked with him and enjoyed his company he enriched my life and every time I met him he gave me another dollop.
My heartfelt condolences to Anne, who was always by his side, and the family on the loss of a great man whose legacy will be enjoyed, but probably unknown, by the generations into whose lives he helped “Put air in their tyres.”
May his generous soul rest in peace.

Pat Magner, with whom I sometimes crossed swords in his prime, was a selfless socialist, a cornerstone of the Labour Party in its greatest years, tough in politics but a gentleman in private life. My sincere sympathy to all his family.
