My deepest condolences to Maura and to all Pat's children and grandchildren. I offered Mass in our Abbey crypt for Pat last night. Although he was never my English teacher, I well recall his aura of calm purposefulness - tinged with humour! I forget the details, but recall Mr Taheny reading a spoof epic poem from Mr McSharry about something in the news - quite impressive enough to have been on the syllabus. Incidentally, I owe special thanks to Maura for having made French a subject I positively enjoyed - rather than merely endured.
May he receive the rewards of his devoted service.

My condolences to all of Pat’s family. I had Mr. McSharry for LC English. He was a gentleman and an excellent teacher whom I remember very fondly. His ability to quieten a room and greet students each day with “Gentlemen” was a lovely trait.

Later, I enjoyed chatting about GAA with Pat at various Bish retirement functions—he was always up for some great Galway–Mayo football discussion!!

My sincerest sympathies to Maura, Brian, Katherine, Blaneth, Jenny, and the extended McSharry family on the death of Pat.

Mr McSharry taught me English for a number of years in the Bish. As others have recounted, apart from his clear knowledge and love of his subject, I truly cannot recall a single instance of him raising his voice to anyone in class. This is a testament not only to the esteem in which he was held by his students but also to the respect he likewise always afforded them - his "gentlemen", as we were addressed at the beginning of every class. I went on to study English in university, and I have no doubt that my love for the subject is due in no small part to Mr McSharry's influence. I'm sure that that influence has been replicated many hundreds of times over his decades of teaching - what a wonderful and enduring legacy.

May Pat's gentle and kind soul rest in peace. You are all in my prayers at this time. Requiescat in pace.

Pat taught us English, but We learned so much more! He taught how to fly, falter, fail and fly again, all the while he gently nudged us from the nest towards adulthood to become 'gentle'-men. That he did all this without ever a cross word or a raised voice was a testament to his character and his paternal devotion to our success. Several generations of Galwegians are forever in his debt !

Sincerest sympathies to my former Bish colleague and former French teacher Maura on the death of a fellow colleague. I remember Pat as a man who immediately welcomed me with collegial respect when I started teaching with him here in the Bish. He was a true mentor to me as a young English teacher. His retirement speech in 2005 was probably the wittiest piece of oratory I have ever heard in my fifty years. I have heard it attested that Mr McSharry could be prompted by a pupil with any line from the prescribed Leaving Cert Shakespearean play and he would be able to flawlessly quote both the preceding and succeeding lines. With Pat’s rhetorical skills now (Deo volente) interceding at the celestial courts, I doubt it will long before Mayo men are lifting Sam once again.

As a Proud FGEO Man, I was very surprised to find out in the latter years of my time in the Bish about Mr McSharry's involvement in what was a hugely successful Fr Griffin's era.
