I recall him being a highly impressive Cadet Captain when I joined the Cadets away back in 1970. Crossing paths many times in the Defence Forces, I was privileged to benefit from a thorough handover as I succeeded him as Officer Commanding the 2nd Battalion in Cathal Brugha Barracks in 2002. Pat was indeed a true professional, highly respected by colleagues of all ranks in the Defence Forces. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

I was both shocked and saddened to hear of Pat's passing. My deepest sympathies to Dympna and family.
Pat was one of the finest officers I ever met, and was a totally loyal friend. He was sans pareil, the best of his generation, and I was privileged to have him as an instructor in the C&S School, and afterwards as a valued colleague.
It also almost goes without saying that socially he was great company.

Had the pleasure of excavating with Pat across several projects in Greece.

He and I were part of a very (very) small team working at Kenchreai, Corinthia. We ended up finding very little (despite best efforts) by excavation, though had a little more luck on the surface survey, turning up everything from Neolithic lithics to WW2 shrapnel fragments (after all, we were extremely close to the Corinthian canal).

We stayed in a house near the site of Isthmia, and next to a taverna which made excellent Greek coffee. En route to site at the crack of dawn, Pat would sing along to (=tolerate) "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" blasting from the stereo of the ancient and battered BSA bus across roads flanked by otherwise tranquil olive groves and populated only by the rare tractor driven by an unimpressed farmer. With daily practice, I dare say we became pretty good.

We also - collectively - developed an addiction (no less) to roquefort on toast, which must have done nothing for our health, but which powered our mornings. For this reason, and among other good memories, Pat will live on in my memory as the man responsible for the best cheese on toast I've ever had.
