Paddy was my mentor when I started teaching and he remained a dear friend for over forty years. He was a gentleman in the truest sense, a man of integrity and a man with a wry and wonderful sense of humour. Pat and the lads thought so highly of Paddy. At a very sad time in our lives Paddy gave me a poem written by Raymond Carver called

Late Fragment

And did you get what
you wanted
from this life, even so?
I did.
And what did you want?
To call myself beloved, to feel myself
beloved on the earth.

Paddy, you were beloved.
Rest in peace after a life well lived.
