I was very sorry to learn of Pat’s sudden passing. RIP. His family and neighbours must be reeling from the shock!

It was only recently that I had the privilege of being introduced to Pat at the annual meeting of the Irish Senior Citizens’ Parliament (ISCP) last May in Dublin’s Liberty Hall. I greatly benefited from both his company and his often astute observations at several meetings of the ISCP executive committee, at Age Action’s AGM and, late last month, at a lobby of general election candidates jointly staged by both organizations in DCU, Drumcondra. His loss to the Grey Movement is immense and we are much in his debt.

Everything Pat spoke about at meetings expressed his deep commitment to pursuing justice for marginalised people and he has left a proud legacy of social and political activism to both his family and the wider community in “The Borough”. I’m grateful to him for introducing me to the Dún Laoghaire branch of Active Retirement Ireland.

My deepest sympathies to you Maura and your family on the very sad passing of Paddy. He was certainly a unique man. One in a million. He was a great debater, few could get the better of him. He was principled, kind with a great sense of humour, great friend and comrade. I will miss him greatly. Rest in peace Paddy. Your work here is done.

Just heard about the passing of my old comrade Paddy. He was a great inspiration for me as a young union branch secretary. He always acted in solidarity with those less fortunate. I will never forget the great times we had together in the engineering section of the Post Office.

We were shocked when we heard, last night, the very sad news about Pat. We wish to sympathise with Maura, and with Ken, Colm, Siobhan, Mairead, Donal and all the Fitzgerald family. We know that you will miss him deeply, but you can be very proud of his loyal service to his community and people. He served with distinction as a Councillor on Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council. I will especially remember his valued support throughout all of my time as a public representative. Pat was deeply principled, direct with his advice and opinions, and always willing to challenge. Above all, Pat was a friend, considerate, courteous, kind and a mischievous sense of humour. Eternal Peace to you Pat.
