PATRICK P.J HOWARD

PJ was a very dear and devoted friend for 46 years and I am very sad that his warm and humorous presence is gone from my life. He will live on in my memory and the memories of all of us who loved and were loved by him and were lucky enough to know him in Tipperary, Dublin and beyond.

I was very saddened to hear today of PJ’s passing. He was the most wonderful husband to Grace and Gerry and I enjoyed our conversations with him and Grace on our visits to Balinteer. I send my deepest condolences to all his McFadden children and grandchildren and to his Howard family. May PJ rest in peace.

Reflections
PJ brought warmth, wisdom, and laughter into the lives of the McFaddens. When he married Grace in 1993, he inherited five grown children and, over time, became a cherished grandfather to nine. His devotion to Grace never wavered, and together they shared 29 years of love and kindness. Their adventures took them across Ireland and farther afield to Spain, Rome, and Medjugorje.
PJ’s connections through his work as lead horticulturist and trainer with the HSE in Dundrum, St. Attracta’s Oratory, the Men’s Shed, and his friends in Ballinteer left a lasting impact.
Like many families, illness touched us—Grace was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in the early 2000s. They faced the challenge with courage, becoming authorities on the condition. PJ led in organizing consultant visits, respite care, and adapted vehicles, showing unwavering commitment.
Few knew PJ’s passion for baking—his brown bread, apple tarts, and strawberry jam were legendary. As stepchildren, we were embraced fully. PJ became a guiding presence, offering advice on gardening, car maintenance, and DIY, always reminding us to “take it handy.”
As a grandfather, he excelled at every level, bringing comfort and joy during family gatherings. PJ gave so much of himself. His legacy of love, faith, and family will live on in the hearts of all who had the joy of knowing him.
