Grainne,
I’m deeply saddened to hear of your Dad, Paddy’s passing, a true eternal gentleman & a good Cavan man. He had such a sharp wit & intelligence, such a joy to be in his company. It was a pleasure and an honour to spend those years in Ormond Quay with you all.
Sending sincere condolences to all of the Shaffrey family.
Cliodhna and Grainne

You were so good to your father he always seemed to be a happy man.

God rest his soul and may you and Conor be at peace.
I have just heard about Paddy. I was wondering where he was. Really missed his chats over a cappucino.

An amazing person and engaging and charming to the last.
Very sorry to hear that Paddy has gone from us. Maura and himself were exceptional people and lovely company to be in.
Sincerest condolences to all the family.
Really very sorry to hear of Paddy's passing. He was a great inspiration to us as we started on this strange pathway of town planning. His insights and understanding and his power to communicate that is is important that we have clarity about what we are trying to create and that human beings should be at the heart of that purpose was truly formative. It provided an underlying rationale for us through our careers. Condolences to Gráinne and all the family but his was truly a life well lived.
Grainne so sad to hear of your dads passing , a true gentleman I had the joy of working with him but also looked forward our meetups at Conferences .
I met Patrick in just a short while and I can say he's such a wonderful man. I Pray he finds eternal rest. Do Accept my condolences Grainne, Cliodhna and every member of the Family. The Lord will comfort you all.
Cliodhna and Gráinne, please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of your father, Paddy. I only had the good fortune to chat with him once at a party in your apartment on the quays, but I remember well the spark of his talk and his gentle humour. May his good soul rest in love and peace, and sustain you both.
Ar dheis lámh Dé go raibh anam Patrick Shaffrey.
As a third-year student of architecture, I spent the summer of 1990 working with Patrick and Maura in Dun Laoghaire. I earned a little less than my counterparts in the larger commercial practices, but the work environment was second to none! The entire office downed tools every day for the morning break and freshly-ground coffee beans would be purchased from Bewleys across the road to make the coffee - a novelty for this country girl 35 years ago! There was never any pressure, and I learned a lot about quiet, timeless architectural interventions and the importance of the public realm.
I offer my sincere sympathies to the Shaffrey family on the loss of a gentleman and a champion of traditional Irish architecture.
I was very sorry to hear of Paddy's passing, but was heartened by watching the low key funeral on line. Paddy and Maura were a very special couple, and their devotion to both the theory and practice of town planning and conservation architecture unsurpassed. Always a pleasure to meet and hear his views on all things Irish. My condolences to Paddy's family and friends at this sad time. He will be remembered fondly by all who were lucky enough to have crossed his earthly path. RIP
Deepest sympathy the Shaffrey family on Paddy’s sad passing. Always a gentleman and a pleasure to meet. May he Rest in Peace.
I am so sorry Cliodhna to hear that your Dad has left this world. I’m sure you celebrated his great life and contribution to you all. Thinking of you and your family at this sad time.
Saddened to hear of Paddy's passing- a gentle man, in all senses of those words and a stalwart bulwark against crassness and sterile vulgarity, in a coarsening architectural/ 'development' milieu in Ireland, for more than half a century; he understood the word conservation, in its deepest sense, and brought wry creative humour to that insight; he has passed the torch into safe hands . Deepest condolences to his sorrowing family and friends ............
Sorry for your loss RIP God Bless 🙏

I first encountered Paddy in 1968 when he ran the town planning course in Bolton Street which was set up by the Department to train planners to implement the 1963 Act. He was a great enthusiast and a true believer in the value of good town planning and he imparted that enthusiasm to his students. He inspired me to a career in planning and I am indebted to him for that. Grainne and Cliodhna - please accept my sincere condolences.

Sincere sympathies to Conor, Clíodhna and Gráinne on the death of Patrick.

Patrick was my lecturer in Town Planning in UCD, 1970-72. Patrick was always inspirational to us students, emphasising the planning principle “get the feel of the place.” He wanted planners to look at the totality of every situation, and understand the nuances. This was reflected by his outstanding book with Maura “The Irish Town – An Approach to Survival” (1975), a publication still so relevant today.

Patrick made a substantial contribution to the development of planning in Ireland.
Sincere condolences to Grainne and all the Shaffrey family. Paddy was a great advocate for the planning profession and leaves an enduring legacy. May he rest in peace.
