So sad to hear the news of Paul’s death. Fondly remember him as such a friendly face at family gatherings over the years. Fun to be around with lots of time for everyone. A truly kind and gentle person. RIP Paul. Taffina, Molly & Sadie O’Nolan
Only hearing about Paul's death now.... all the tributes are true, a lovely, gentle, kind and brilliantly creative guy....rest in peace Paul, sincere condolences to family and many friends...
Paul was such unique and charismatic individual with charming ways and great style.
Our early years In Dublin as students were very special and he was family to me as I was so far from home .
So many adventures over the years ....Paul always brought out the best in people and loved animals too.
He opened worlds in Italy with his clever use of language and unusual take on the world .
His sense of style was inspiring and he always made a beautiful home .
He will always be in my thoughts and sincerest condolences to his family and shared friends .

Our deepest sympathies with Paul’s friends and family. Paul was our lovely neighbour who was a pure gent and kindly minded our cat Ciarán. He will be missed dearly on the street.
Brian, sincere condolences on the death of your brother. Thinking of you and all of the family. May he rest in peace.
I got to know Paul in Dublin in 1979. We both moved away, and sadly the years passed and we Iost touch. I can still remember his wonderfully distinct voice.
As a fellow past pupil of Blackrock College, I always admired his courage in declaring his sexuality to the dean of boarders whilst still a student and will always remember him introducing himself to my father as my boyfriend on the occasion of my 21st birthday.
Uncompromising certainly, aesthetically self-assured from the first, and with a personality that was as wry as his smile. We only ever met infrequently over the intervening years but it was always a pleasure when we did. Best wishes and condolences to his brother Peter and all his family and condolences also to those whom counted him as friend.

I was shocked and saddened to read of Paul’s untimely death. I remember Paul from the Temple Bar and Hirschfeld Centre days. He was a beautiful man in every respect. Our occasional interactions over the years since were always warm and funny. My condolences to Paul’s family and many friends, in particular Hugo.
Paul will always remain a beautiful man.

A long time knowing Paul since he lived in an old warehouse in Templebar, and always a gent.

It’s hard to overstate the impression made by Paul in late 70’s Dublin when he lived with his friend Marianna in the coolest ( in every sense of the word ) loft on Temple Lane, when Temple Bar was still an edgy outpost.
Part Ariel, part Peter Pan , part Artful Dodger, he embodied the joy of youth with such limitless vigour and style at a time when everything seemed possible . He possessed an unworldly quality combined with an exacting and uncompromising aesthetic sense which he carried into his middle years ; at times to his own disadvantage. Always a pleasure to meet, he never lost his charm and warmth and his broad mischievous smile.
My sincere condolences to Paul’s family and friends on the untimely loss of this singular and lovely man .

Fifty years ago at least since we first met and the immediate thing to notice was his impish grin. It stayed to the end, although the last time we encountered was three years ago and when our eyes met, there it was, the grin. Oh, the laughs we had, generally through serious conversations, enjoying them with the relish of complete irreverence. Places lit up when Paul arrived. He had that. You noticed him but there was never any swagger. Missed he will be, but never overlooked or forgotten in long chatty evenings to come. Goodbye, Paul.

I got Paul’s no. in Milan, as a newbie there, back in the day. He was just lovely, so generous and loving, my first refuge, where I could be in tears, he would put his arm around me, comfort me, without even knowing me. I will always remember Paul for that.
As we got to know each other over the years…we had such great fun. He was hilariously funny. A real gentleman, and beautiful hooligan too. I was always looking forward to my son Johnjoe meeting him…alas it is not to be.
I don’t relish a world without you Paul…and you won’t be a stranger.
Condolences to your family, and to us

Brian, sincere condolences to you, to Bernadette and to all the Austen family on the passing of Paul. May He Rest in Peace
Sincere sympathies to all the Austen family and Paul's many beloved friends over the years. Paul was a special man who touched many in his short life. We were friends since art college days at NCAD where he began to make his mark with an exquisite design sense that was very much his own. I will miss his inimitable charm, grace and sense of humour. Rest in peace old friend.
