Paul Byrne

I only properly met Paul once, in Edinburgh at the festival in 2010, though was occasionally around him at various events over the years since, where he was always, always, grinning.

My overwhelming memory of that meeting is how he took the time to chat and make me feel welcome. By all accounts, this was just him being himself. Thanks, Paul. We've lost one of the good ones.

I only met Paul once. It was 1990 and I was drunk. He seemed a great lad. If his siblings are anything to go by then he definitely was a great lad. I'm sure you are all going to miss him terribly and I'm thinking of you a lot these last few weeks. RIP Paul

Still can't believe Paul is gone. I doubt I will ever feel such a combination of laughter and sadness as when his final song played yesterday. Classic Paul. He was such a huge part of so many people's lives and forever in our thoughts, even after many had been separated by geography and their lives moving in different directions as all those adult responsibilities took over from the endless hours you are free to spend doing lots of wonderful nothing when you are young.

We didn't see each other as often but nothing will ever take away all those nights, chats, gigs, laughs, and the joy of just hanging out discovering all the good things that make life worth living when we were young. A well-spent misspent youth.

I was so happy to see him in such good form when we were both living in London. Swords on tour. A truly unique character and person who will be deeply missed. Oh for one more night in Fibbers or Dazed back in the 90s. A stroll through the valley too, to all our old haunts we spent so many summer nights at. My deepest condolences to all of the Byrne family and the many friends, colleagues, and co-conspirators who will never meet anyone quite like him again. A desperately sad time. x

Paul was one of the most wonderful, funny supportive people I ever knew. He welcomed me in to what became my circle of friends and was so supportive. Just someone who made you feel like you were the best version of yourself. I will miss him so much and send my condolences to those who will miss him the most. X

Paul was a very good friend for a very long time. He and the hospitality of his family home was central to so much for so many people. He was a charming and intelligent person with great talent. It is a deeply sad thing to know he is gone. Our sincere condolences to Jill, Eddie, Trish, Stephen and Ed. Paul will never be forgotten.

I didn't know Paul but I knew his work, which was mighty, and Trish and Stevie B, who are wonderful. He made the world better while he was in it. I am so very sorry for your loss.

I had the great privilege of working with Paul who then became a dear friend. He was one of those amazing people who was always true to his own beliefs, never compromised on what his heart told him and yet was adored and loved by all who knew him. He was the person we all wanted to please. He was undoubtedly one of the kindest and wittiest people I’ve ever known. My heart goes out to you all at this sad, sad time. I hope soon the memories of happier times will eclipse the current raw grief.

Christine and I are very sorry to hear of the death of Paul.

I was thinking of him only the other day and he was very much part of the fabric of mine and any relationship with Trish, Jill, Stephen, Ed, Eddie and all the extended Byrne family and friends. We had a number of thoughtful conversations on which I still reflect.

I knew Paul a bit in Dublin and better in London, he was always happy to introduce me to his life, and to help others. He also had a great eye for how and why comedy worked - he'll be greatly missed.

My path crossed Paul's only very occasionally, but meeting him was always a delight. He was such a warm and funny individual that his presence made the world a better place. My sincerest sympathies are with all his family and his close friends.

My heart goes out to you, loss of anyone is immense Paul was a good friend to me in a time when I really needed it, always kept me laughing, incredibly smart and kind. Much love to you all xxx

Paul was a secondary school class-mate who became a good friend of mine. He was good to me when that felt like the exception to the rule.

He taught me a lot actually... That it's best to ignore those whose opinions don't matter to you, not to fight unnecessary battles, being quiet at the right time can sort out all kinds of problems and that friends can have a laugh about you, as long as they're laughing WITH you!

We had a class Kriskindle one year and he convinced me the girl I was fawning over at the time asked him what she should buy me. The joker amped me up for weeks about it, to fever pitch. When the day came, the teacher announced that it was in fact him...my jaw hit the ground!😆

What a funny guy, so glad to hear he got to flourish in the comedy world.

I'm very grateful to have had him in my life during those awkward teenage years and deeply saddened to hear of his passing... The laughter that surrounded him, because of him, fills my ears when he pops up into my mind, and the accompanying picture...his smiling, happy face.

Laughing is the pinnacle of living I feel, he created so, so much of it for so, so many...and that is a beautiful legacy.

Paul was a huge part of so many people’s lives and I, and all his old friends from Swords, have an abundance of memories of him and our time spent with him to draw upon.

Paul challenged us, entertained us, educated us in the ways of music and comedy and was someone who changed the dynamic of a room for the better just by being there. Despite having so many friends (we didn’t drop by the house, but rather swarmed by) he had the ability to make everyone feel like they were the most interesting one in his company.
