Deepest sympathy to Paul's family. Take consolation that his legacy is timeless. May he rest in peace. Go ndéana Dia trócaire ar a anam dílis.
In December 1986 I lived with my husband in North Carolina. Pre internet I was blissfully unaware of current affairs in Dublin until at a Christmas gathering of Irish expats a recent arrival from Dublin mentioned that that 'lunatic' Crotty was taking the government to court. On winning the case in the Supreme Court Paul became my hero. Some years later when I met Paul, I found him to be a quiet, gentle and unassuming character, a true democrat and a national hero.
My sympathy to Paul's family and friends, may he rest in peace.

So sorry to learn of the death of Paul Callan. My sincere sympathies to his family.
He was so encouraging to a younger generation of us coming through in the 1990s, sharing our concern for the declining state of the planet and the accompanying erosion of human rights.
Way ahead of the curve, he was astute and erudite with insights which he modestly and generously shared, gently educating and signposting ways forward at critical moments in various cases and campaigns.

Paul managed to combine a brilliant legal mind, with his great humility and openness to all. He had no difficulty in talking to, and creating friendship with, complete strangers. His life was an inspiration to all whom he met. If he could help someone, he was prepared to do so without regard to the difficulties he underwent in doing so. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

Paul was an amazing gentleman.
I first got to know him during the initial injunction stage of the Crotty case at the end of 1986. What a success, to be followed by many more, such as McKenna & Coughlan.
My abiding memory is of him saying out loud while thinking: "Just say, just say..", something noted I'm sure by all those who had the honour to work alongside him.
This truly is the end of an era.

I had the pleasure of knowing Paul from my first year at the bar and being his junior in the Bula case. He worked ferociously hard and tirelessly for his clients. Nothing phased him. RIP
I had the good fortune to meet Paul having been introduced by his nephew Rory. Unfortunately it was just the one meeting but sufficient to gauge the mark of the man. Sadly missed.
Condolences to the family of my dear friend Paul, on the very sad passing of Paul , a giant , a stalwart and someone who never gave up on our telephone conversations which after reading the many incredible tributes to Paul, you listened to all the mundane conversations we shared together. Your love for all of your nieces and nephews and your Horses and your battles with the racing board always left me spellbound ! To have the ear of such an imminent advocate of the law who never lost the run of himself was so admirable. Your great friendship to Hugh and me over so many years , your visits to the Penthouse never ending conversations with us, and the visits with your Mother and her sister to Classiebawn not forgetting your Oz relations were always so memorable. May your kind and gentle soul rest in Peace.”He fought the Good Fight, he finished the Race, and he kept the faith! Rest now dear friend.

Sincere condolences to the callan family on the death of Paul. He was one of lifes gentlemen. I have great memories of him during my working years in the corner pharmacy in Castleblayney.
Paul Callan made his mark on Irish history by his legal work “pro bono publico”. Without his strong democratic commitment and his willingness to take on major constitutional cases on what he regarded as their inherent intellectual merit, there would have been no 1987 Crotty judgement by the Supreme Court on the Single European Act; for he was chief counsel for economist Raymond Crotty in that action. As a consequence there would have no referendum on this European Treaty that gave the EC/EU its internal market. Almost certainly too there would have been no later referendums on the 1992 Maastricht Treaty, the 1998 Amsterdam Treaty, the Nice Treaty – twice, in 2001 and 2002 – and the EU Constitution/Lisbon Treaty, again twice, in 2008 and 2009. Paul also acted as chief counsel in the 1995 McKenna case outlawing the one-sided expenditure of public money in referendums, in the 2000 Coughlan case on equality in free referendum broadcasts, and in the 2012 Pringle case on the European Stability Mechanism – all on a “pro bono” basis. A true tribune of the people, he was a great Irishman, a committed democrat and a good man in every way. The Irish people owe him a debt of gratitude, although, being a modest person, few know of his public-spirited legal work.
