Paul was a member of the Common Room in UCD. In fact, he was probably the Common Room's oldest member! He was a stalwart and regular user of the old Common Room. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.
I have only just learned (end of April) of Paul's death and want to extend my sympathy to his family and friends. For decades, Paul was a very familiar figure in the corridors of UCD where the French Department plied its trade. He took a degree in French and I remember him being in one of my BA translation classes. He was by far the most committed student in the class. His special interest both then and when he went on to do postgraduate work in languages was what he called 'difficult words'. Like all of our extra-'mature' students, he was an immense teaching asset, showing students what linguistic passion looked like in action. I often had lunch with him in Belfield when he was a post-graduate. The longevity of his multilingual interests was inspiring and exemplary. Ni bheidh a leithéid arís ann....
Paul attended the B.A. Italian course 2001-2004 for mature students.in UCD.& his wit made the grammar tutorials lively while his enquiring mind helped those of us who were a bit on the lazy side.He used to participate in the Italian conversation exchange in the Central Library. His interest in languages took him to the continent & he had great stories to tell.It was an honour to have been able to drive him home or to the dart because he was such good company.

Very sorry to hear about Paul's death. I remember him very well, when both of us were active members of An Taisce – and that was not yesterday or a few months ago. Paul was a great supporter of the efforts to protect Ireland's environment and heritage, and now it is up to others to follow him.

Condolences to Paul’s relatives. Got to know Paul well while working in Trinity. We had a shared love of languages and had many an interesting journey home on the Dart. One of the last times I met him was up in Woodies where he was having a key cut, I drove him home and stopped on the way so he could pick up a few groceries. He bought me a bar of chocolate, that was so nice.
Rest in Peace Professor .
