I just got the news (Saturday)...condolences to Danny and Sammy and his family.
I bumped into Paul back in '70s in Dublin when I was studying literature in TCD. I'd reckon Paul knew more about the subject than any of the lecturers I encountered. Bumped into him again in Galway years later. A learned and generous man.
The phrase "when an old man dies, a library burns" is an African proverb, often attributed to the Malian intellectual Amadou Hampâté Bâ. The saying highlights the loss of accumulated wisdom, experience, and oral tradition contained within elders when they pass away. I cannot think of anyone I've met that the phrase fits as well.
