To the Mackay family - I didn't know your father & grandfather personally but may he rest in peace. I was interested in though not directly involved in politics. There was a family connection with the PDs in its early days and, if memory serves me correctly, there may have been a nodding acquaintance with Ronan in UCD in the '90s. What I had known about your Dad & Grandad a long time ago and this is borne out by tributes and obituaries is that he was a man of courage, honour and straight dealing. That is the essence of patriotism. May Paul's gentle soul rest in peace.
— UCD alumnus

Dearest Ronan, Elva, Gavan & Mr. Mackays Beautiful Family.

Words can never be enough to express sympathy nor quantify the pain you're all feeling.

We, reading your announcement, can only bare witness to your Love for your Dad, your Grandfather and the most beautiful impact he has had on our all our lives.

What I can say and write is that Paul is the most honourable Man I've ever met in business, which, was both a blessing and a curse.

There'll never be another like him and I'm doubtful I'll ever take another at his word.

He was uniquely beautiful, sometimes sourly, but always an honest and beautiful Soul.

We had our disagreements but he never once allowed me to lose face in front of others, he fought my corner, saw the bigger picture and was always true to his word.

I will miss him greatly, until the next time Mr. Mackay.

Fly high,

Pete Xx

It is with such sorrow I express my deepest condolences to you all on Paul’s passing. We met while during our studies in the Milltown Institute during our theological studies. Our great friendship continued during our Holy Land trip and further our Italy tour under the guidance of our lecturer Fr Pat Rogers, which Lila joined us on. Our friendship was wonderful and included further dinner parties in my home with Bernard & Helen Roche & my sister Barbara. Sadly, since then we lost Lila, Helen & now Paul. I pray they are all now together & remembering our wonderful get togethers.
To all of Paul & Lila’s family, you had an amazing parents & I’m blessed to have known them & shared wonderful memories at dinner parties at my home.
My love & condolences to each of you all.
I must mention when we were on our Italy tour Hannah, you were born and all the focus was on getting a present!! Paul & Lila were so, so excited it was all about getting a present to bring home for her. Although it’s years later Hannah, I hope in these sad days, you can know how much your coming into this world lite up Paul’s & Lila’s lives.
I’m blessed to both your parents touched my life. Catherine D
