Paula Allen

Paula was strong and inspirational woman who will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know her. Condolences to all of her family.

I am so sorry to hear of Paula's passing. What a beautiful human being she was and a joy to chat to in the staffroom. I remember especially her kindness when my father died. At a time when my grief was hardly acknowledged by many, she gifted me a little book on grief that she had picked up while browsing a bookshop and thinking of me. I have never forgotten that thoughtful gesture. I hope you, her family, meet with similar kindness from others in your grief. Your loss is immense and Paula would want you to be wrapped in the same care and compassion that she offered to the bereaved.

I'm only after noticing this death notice, in passing. I think you should know this story... I failed my history exam in the year before the syllabus changed, probably 20 years ago. Upon failing the exam, I wanted to drop history when repeating in Yeats. While I enjoyed the subject, I wasn't good at memorizing. When I went to Yeats, I was convinced to hold onto it. I reluctantly agreed. It went on to become my favorite subject once again, as Paula would make us engage in conversation around topics, not just memorize the stuff in books... in fact, to my memory, we didn't have a history book. She brought us through everything, from the rising, to World War 2 etc. through conversation. She didn't force us to "learn", she taught us to discuss, and have opinions on the topics that came up, then helped us calculate which topics would be relevant... I went from an E, to a B1 or B2. She was a wonderful teacher, and if we had more like Paula Allen, we'd have an academic system that a lot more students would be eager to engage in. There's not many teachers in my life that left a lasting impression, and I have brought her name and style up on many occasions since. I'm very sad to see her passing, and my deepest sympathies go to her family, friends and all of those who knew her. The world will be a sadder place without her, and not half as well taught.

Those final years in secondary school are difficult for any student but Paula made them easier by offering a comfortable, inquisitive and engaging place of learning. In fact, she offered all that and more. Almost six years since I was taught by her, and I find her History and English lessons are still helpful in my daily life. Because of this, I think of her often and was truly devastated to hear of her passing.

When my granddad passed away during school, Paula showed me incredible kindness and generosity upon my return. I want to extend the same kindness to her family now. I am truly sorry for your loss, and my sincerest condolences go out to all of you during this difficult time. May she rest in peace.

Paula was a lovely, beautifully eccentric, wonderfully hilarious person and an amazing and endlessly knowledgeable teacher. I still remember getting the loveliest and warmest of hugs from her on my last day of school, paired with the most heartwarming and comforting of smiles. She was amazing and so joyfully beloved by the whole school, from the teachers and staff to the endless amount of students whose hearts she touched, and will be dearly missed, leaving an unfillable absence in the lives of all of those she delighted and loved with her truly uniquely loving presence. Dave,Catrena and all the Allen family. We were shocked and saddened to hear of Paula's passing. We were neighbours of Paula and her mum in Loughrea. They brought lots of life and fun to our street, we had nights out and nights in. We were just catching up with Paula a couple of weeks ago . Our condolences to all the family.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Paula's passing. Paula was my history teacher when I was in Yeats College and was the most incredible teacher I've ever had. I will always remember her kindness towards me after losing my brother, she would come up to me after class or take me out of class just to have a chat and make sure everything was ok. She was full of encouragement and had confidence in me when I had none. I often think of Paula and will forever remember her warmth, humour and the love she had for all her students. Paula you were an inspiration to us all and I will forever be grateful to you for believing in me.
