Dearest Mary... i am so sorry sorry to hear of Peadars passing. He was a kind, funny and hugely interesting man.
He became a fixture in The Kitchen when he popped in for his cappuccino on his way for his swims in Blackrock.... bringing a laugh and a bit of chat to all the waiting staff and indeed all of the crew. I was incredibly proud that he felt so at home with us and well... when he mentioned us in his column we were thrilled with ourselves.

Galway has lost a true true gentlemen. He will be missed.
Thinking of you and all the family at this sad time. RIP Peadar.

Sincere condolences to Mary and to all the O'Dowd family, extended family, relations and friends on the sad passing of Peadar. He had such a wealth of knowledge on so many issues of local and national history and heritage, including 'milestones', which our heritage group had the honor, privalige and gratitude of receiving his wisdom during our 2016 'milestone 112 replica' project in Moycullen. And we'll again be utilising his learned milestone knowledge next summer when we complete the re-installation of the (repaired) original (Larkin) 'Rosscahill Milestone' from over 200 years ago - adjacent to its original road location on the N59 (near the former Rosscahill Railway Station). We already had plans to have Peadar involved in this upcoming event but sadly this won't now occur. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

I am so sorry to hear of the sad passing of Peadar. To his wife Mary and extended families I send my condolences. I first met Peadar when he taught in St Benins Voc School in Glenamaddy. Although I went to the local convent at the time Peadar played a big part in our lives through his love of Camogie. He started camogie in The Tech and they won a County Final for the first time ever. I remember the great excitement around the local areas at the time. He was involved then with Fr Sean Higgins and Sister Fatima in the forming a Camogie Club in the area which went on to great succes. Any time in later years when camogie is mentioned...Peadars' bubbly friendy nature is recalled. Winning didnt matter with Peadar .. it was the fun of taking part. I met Peadar and Mary at our 40th Reunion a few years back in Kilkerrin. It was an honour and priviledge to have known him. Rest in Peace Peadar but I am sure you are now enjoying plenty of chats in Heaven with all your friends long gone and of course making new ones as well.

So sorry to learn of Peadars passing as he was a familiar person on the Long Walk, particularly at his chosen spot where he sat, having his coffee, exchanging conversation with passers-by &enjoying the opportunity to absorb the sea scents of that location notwithstanding the restricted vision made available to him.Clearly a man at peace with himself, what was denied to his eyes was more than compensated for in his absorption of his remaining faculties &the added sensitivities which they provided to him.
He had some short catchphrases both apt&positive which he shared with me& presumably others reflecting the sunny nature of his Soul!
HE carries those characteristics to the Next Life!
Farewell Peadar,thanks for your Humanity,
John D-L.

I just know that all past and present members of An Taisce would wish me to pass on their condolences to Peadar's Mary, and all the O'Dowd family at this so tragic time. The Taisce branch enjoyed on so many occasions Peadars gift of knowledge he passed on at our once regular lectures, slide shows and Christmas partys at the Ardilaun Hotel. Also, on the many bus tours guided by Peadars wit and deep knowledge of his native city & countys built and natural heritage. My first book purchase on our arrival to live in Galway, over 40 years ago, a booklet really, was co-written by Peadar. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

Peadar's passing is such a sad loss to Mary and his extended family, and you all have my sincere condolences. But what a legacy he has left us with. Peadar was the ultimate Galwegian, who loved Galway with every fibre of his being. The books, articles and drawings he has left behind comprise a collection on the history and heritage of Galway - including its many stories - that is never likely to be equalled. We are greatly in his debt for what he has left us, and privileged to have known him. Thank you Mary for sharing your kind, generous, lovely husband with us for so long. We are much the poorer for his passing. Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.
