Peter and Dad worked together at one stage with Brit Rail along with the late Jimmy McGee. Dad spoke highly of Peter and I had the privilege of meeting Peter and his lovely wife Tina over the subsequent years.
The death of Peter and this week Des Casey of Dundalk brings to an end the people who were contacts of my Dad.

Peter: abiding memories of the golden times we shared.

"But when the great and good depart,
What is it more than this
That Man, who is from God sent forth,
Doth yet again to God return?"

Níl tú imithe uainn ach tamall romhainn.

Sincerest sympathies
With the sad passing of Peter we have lost one of our great sporting commentators. Peter epitomised a journalistic generation built on humility, on respect and most of all on genuine trust worthiness. Nastiness and/or smart alickery were beyond his comprehension. Whether football, athletics or boxing in that Premiership race he was tops bar none. Ar Dheis De go raibh a anam Dilis.

Sincere condolences to the Byrne family. My father Peadar O Brien always spoke very fondly of Peter. They were great friends back in the day. Peter delivered a lovely eulogy at my Dad's funeral. May he rest in peace.
That photo sums Peter Byrne up . . . a lovable rogue who enjoyed life to the full . . . as a young copyboy in the Irish Times’ sports department, I loved seeing Peter appear in the office on the third floor . . . it’s then that all the laughter, high jinks and horseplay began . . . there was no better man to stir the pot and everyone was fair game . . . but it was all harmless fun . . . Peter was not just an outstanding journalist, he was an outstanding human being . . . he was like a favourite uncle to me and I’m honoured to have had him as a friend and work colleague . . . you’d be more likely to find a horse with two tails than to hear anyone criticise him . . . it’s a testament to Peter that during the Pandemic, he took it upon himself to ring all his former colleagues to see how they were doing . . . to his devoted wife Tina and family, it must be comforting to know that Peter leaves behind a legacy second to none . . . he’ll be missed terribly.
To Peters family...so so sorry for your loss...may peter rest in peace..
