Peter Spelman

Pete and NUG TKD felt like a fact of life, like the two would always be there together. I learned so much from Pete, not just taekwondo but also being present and being good craic with students, and I try to carry those lessons from Pete forward in how I teach my students.

Peter was a good man and an example to many. A consummate martial artist and the epitome of indomitable spirit, Irish taekwondo will be poorer without him. Deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and everyone who knew him through taekwondo. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

My sincere condolences to the Spelman family. I was in the club when Peter first joined. He was the life and soul of many a night out. He was liked by everyone and always had a big smile on his face, even during the tough squad sessions on a Saturday morning. He is the longest running instructor in the club since it started. His dedication to Tae Kwon Do and his students is inspiring. You will be missed Pete.

Pete was my most cherished friend. We met in the Bish, and at some point we became inseparable, for as long as I lived in Galway. Every cobblestone, every public place to sit in Galway is adorned with memories of our long and rambling conversations on just about any topic one can imagine. I loved how our friendship always felt like we could pick it up instantly after not seeing each other in a year.
Franz Liszt wrote a piece called Consolation No. 3, (as a tribute when his kindred spirit Chopin died), it seems to capture the feeling better than any words. My heart goes out to his family and many friends.

I send all my love and prayers to you all during this incredibly sad time but I am sure you are all incredibly proud of how much he was loved and how much he had achieved. RIP Peter and I am sure you will be surrounded by all our lost angels.

I got to know you through Dave, but over the years, you had become a truly dear friend. We were looking forward to catching up with you – instead, we were met with the most heartbreaking news.

Pete and I met in school and remained lifelong friends. He was, in so many ways, the antidote to life, witty, kind, insightful, and endlessly generous with his time and care. He had a rare gift for bringing lightness to the heaviest of moments, always knowing the right thing to say or do.

His world revolved around people. Whether through his lifelong dedication to Taekwondo, caring selflessly for unwell family members, or quietly looking out for his friends, Pete gave everything of himself. He never put himself first. He never sought praise, recognition, or material things. What mattered to him were people, community, and doing right by others.

For those of us lucky enough to have known him, we would have done anything for him, because he had already done everything for us.

He leaves behind a space that cannot be filled, but also a legacy of warmth, humour, loyalty, and quiet strength that will stay with us always.

Rest easy, Pete. You were one of a kind.

I was shocked and saddened to hear the sad news.

I went to school with Peter in St.Pats and the Bish, he was witty, thoughtful and always made me laugh.

RIP Peter

Words just can’t describe my shock and sadness at Pete’s passing. I moved to Galway from Cork for college without knowing a single person there. I was very shy at that age but within a week of joining the Taekwon-Do club I was hanging out with everyone, and it felt like I’d been there for years. Pete made that possible. He took training seriously but always made sure we had fun and everyone felt included. It wasn’t long before Pete was not just my coach but became one of my closest friends. In my many years as a Taekwon-do coach I have tried to carry Pete’s lessons with me. Train hard but never forget to have fun. A club should be more than somewhere to practice a sport but should be a place where people can feel they belong.

Most people will remember Pete as the life of the party. For his quick-wit and legendary dance moves. I liked that side of him but for me I will never forget the quieter, kind and sensitive soul that not everybody saw. He was someone who would genuinely do anything for you. He did more for me than he ever knew. Rest in peace buddy.

Sincere condolences to Pete’s family. I was very sorry to hear of his sudden passing. I got to know Pete through the NUIG Taekwondo club, where he was both a mentor and friend to us all. Pete enriched the lives of so many by sharing his love and knowledge of taekwondo so willingly.

Very shocked and saddened to hear about Peter’s passing. We were best friends throughout all our time in The Bish as well as our first years of University. I spent many weekends at his house playing SNES. We both shared a love of physics and both chose to study it at university as a result. I have a lot to thank him for. Sad that I had not seen him for some years.
