To George, Harvey, Victor, Georgina and all the Smyth family, we offer our sincere sympathy to you on the sudden passing of Philip. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time.
I was devastated to find out about Philip's passing. We met last summer when I had planned a trip to Scotland and Ireland for 18 travelers and we were so lucky to have Philip assigned to our trip as the tour director. In the two weeks that we traveled with him, I was impressed with his knowledge. As a former German and English teacher, I sponsored many European trips over my career. Tour directors can be very knowledgeable, but sometimes have a huge ego to match. That was definitely not Philip. Philip was truly one of my favorites and the travelers whom I brought loved him as a guide. During the course of our two week journey, Philip and I began discussing a future trip to England and Wales. He and I had been in contact since then via WhatsApp and email and together we planned a wonderful trip for the summer of 2027. The last message that I sent him was to let him know that 21 travelers had enrolled on that trip and I wished him a safe journey to South Africa.
In the short time that I knew Philip, it was easy to see what a wonderful person he was. He was kind, empathetic, and extremely conscientious.
I will miss him greatly and the world has lost a very bright light. The trip in 2027 will be bittersweet because he will be so missed, but his touches on that trip will be enjoyed in his memory.
My thoughts are with his family who have lost such a special member and all of his colleagues and friends.

I was so saddened to hear of Philip's passing. I remember dearly the fun times we shared in Mexico, his sense of humour, of adventure and mischief made him such great company. He was also a kind and thoughtful part of our group and you could always depend on him during dufficult times. He was clearly very dedicated to his work and highly respected by students and colleagues. My sincere sympathies to his family and close friends.
I have just heard of Philip’s passing. Last summer he took a group of us from the US on a wonderful trip through Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland. He had such knowledge of all the countries but it is his kindness that will be remembered more. I am so sorry for your loss. Philip will be fondly remembered

Working with Philip in the Chemistry lab over the past four years was a true privilege. Philip's professionalism, organization, and dedication set a standard that inspired everyone around him.
Philip’s kindness, calm presence, and sense of humor made every experiment, lesson, and busy lab day a joy to be part of. He had an incredible ability to make even the most complex concepts clear and engaging. Deeply committed to his students, he ensured they mastered all the essential skills of the IB program through countless lab experiments. Supporting him and his students in the lab was always a pleasure.
Philip lived by his deeds rather than words. He was a man who truly treasured his time, using it wisely to teach, prepare, and mentor. I recall a moment when former students came to visit him during a meeting; afterward. He remarked, “Why are they looking for me? They should go and enjoy their lives.” That is a perfect testament to his humble, forward-looking nature.
I will always remember his patience, professionalism, and the care he showed in everything he did. Philip was not only a remarkable teacher but also a genuinely good person who made a lasting impact on everyone.
Philip will be deeply missed but not forgotten. He will always be remembered with admiration, respect, and fondness. My sincerest condolences go out to Philip’s family and friends. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

Philip was my wonderful friend and one-time boss at Portland Place School. I remember when I first started at the school I used to be afraid of him because he seemed so stern! But my respect for him became absolute at work and later I was lucky to get to know him as a friend. He was my inspiration for moving to teach abroad and he helped me through the whole process, providing guidance and support as always. Philip stayed with me one weekend after I moved to China and we had the most hilarious time (with a lot of wine involved!). He was so kind, warm, FUNNY and a true gentleman. I am beyond grateful that I got to spend one last time with him last summer during my wedding. I will miss hearing him say “Darling!” and every time I see a bottle of rosé wine I will think fondly of him.
Taken too soon, darling Philip xx

We are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear colleague, Philip.
Philip was more than a chemistry teacher. He was a calm and steady presence in our school. His quiet nature, gentle spirit, and genuine kindness touched everyone around him. He carried himself with professionalism and grace, always patient, thoughtful, and willing to support others without seeking recognition.
He was also passionate about bringing innovation into his classroom. Philip was inspired by the use of virtual reality in chemistry, especially as a way to make complex concepts easier for students to understand. I had the privilege of supporting him in implementing VR with his students, and his enthusiasm was truly inspiring. He once shared, “VR is an excellent and engaging way to teach topics that are difficult for students to visualise.” Seeing his students engage with learning in new ways brought him great satisfaction.
Our hearts go out to his family and loved ones during this difficult time. Philip will always be remembered with appreciation, warmth, and deep respect.

I didn’t know Philip, but he was a teacher at CAC, a community that we are also a part of. I also happen to be Irish, and was very moved today by the minute’s silence we held for Philip at the CAC international fair. His loss to the school and community was palpable. Condolences to Victor and the Smyth family on the sudden passing of Philip. You are in our thoughts at this difficult time.
It was a joy and privilege to work with Philip for several years at EJM in London, where his dry wit and quick intelligence were legendary. He often had me crying with laughter. The students adored him and he adored them, and his professionalism and passion for educating the whole child was an inspiration. Always kind, always generous, and always loyal to what mattered, his presence in our school made it a better place to be for everyone. A world without him in it is difficult to comprehend. He was a rare, true gentleman and a wonderful soul. I’m so glad our paths crossed, albeit too briefly. I send my love to his family - please know that so many colleagues and former students will always remember him with love and the utmost respect x
