Philip (Phil) Tierney

I got the sad news of Phil’s passing a couple of weeks ago. I had known Phil since he joined Lehman in 2005. He left Lehman before the bank’s collapse but he kept in touch and a group of us would meet up regularly for a few pints every couple of months or so. I last saw him in the Old Kings Head at London Bridge only a few weeks before he died. He was his usual cheerful self and was always terrific company. He was widely travelled, well read and knowledgeable about everything in a pleasant, understated way. I knew that Phil played golf, but I never knew that he was so good at it until I read some of the tributes to him on this page. That was typical of him, he would never blow his own trumpet. Phil was also a thoroughly decent man. When one of our colleagues at Lehman suffered a catastrophic medical episode that led to him being hospitalized in a coma for a long time followed by months of rehab, Phil was always the one who would rally the troops to go and visit him. By coincidence my daughter, Catherine, was on the graduate program at Barcap at the same time as Phil was working there after he left Lehman. I told her to go along and say Hi to him. Phil was great. He went out of his way to help her and other members of that grad cohort in any way he could.
Phil's death is a great loss to us all, his many groups of friends and especially to his family. We will never forget his humour, kindness and humanity, May he rest in peace.

Phil was the most complimentary man I ever met. The first time we went golfing and I had a terrible game, he said "There's a golfer in you yet." When I lost weight, he said "You're looking well." When I gained weight, he said "You know, this really suits you." When I built my house, he said "What an accomplishment, to shelter your family." Compliments like these only come from a man who has found peace, and confidence, and happiness in his own life. Phil is dearly missed for his giant smile, ever-positive outlook, and his ability to make anyone feel comfortable in his presence. He was a true friend, and this world has lost one of the best there ever was. Maura, we can only thank you for bringing him into this world, so he could teach us all what it means to be lovely. That is the lasting legacy he left upon us.

Deirdre, I was so very sorry, and shocked, to hear this sad news. My deepest sympathies to you, your Mam and all of your family on your loss. I'll be thinking of you all and wishing you the strength to come through this difficult time. RIP.

I first met Phil in UCD and we stayed in touch in London.
While I didn’t see him often I was always happy when I did.
He always had that wonderful earthy laugh, never too busy to stop and chat and giggle and always had time.
He’s definitely gone too soon.

Deepest sympathy to all of the Tierney family. I met Phil many years ago through his Brother Patrick 'Paddy'. We shared some incredible times playing golf together in Ireland, Scotland and most recently in York last September. I'll always refereed to them as golf marathons not holidays because we packed so many holes in no matter the weather, travelling from course to course all packed in to a hire car driving through the a-roads in Ireland some how making our next tee time. As I write this I'm still in shock of his passing. I will miss his kind personality, our times of the course, eating chilli burgers in St Andrews and Phil smashing his driver with his trusty right to left curve miles passed me. Will miss you loads Phil, won't be the same without you, rest in peace, J x

It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Phil, I knew him from our days at UCD. He was a great guy, well respected and liked by all who knew him. I heard during the week that the flag at Hadley Wood was flying at half mast in respect for Phil last week.
