Pierce Murphy

Pierce was my first-year Irish teacher at the Christian Brothers' secondary school for the academic year 1971/72, and it is a testament to his methodical approach to the teaching of Irish grammar that the notes we copied down from the blackboard in those distant days of youth I still retain more than fifty-four years later. Coincidentally, our teacher of the previous year at Scoil Ailbhe had been his uncle, the well-respected Willie O'Dwyer. Little did I realise then that by 1980 I would return to work alongside Pierce at our alma mater and become life-long friends.
Happy memories of Pierce from that era include: building sets with the Thurles drama group, preparing the track and jumping area for the school sports day, in the 'railway field', which had been so successfully revived by our colleague the late Gerard O'Leary, and assisting him backstage at school musicals, beginning with a tentative venture in the mid-1980s when some CBS students played leading roles in a Presentation Convent production.
Not alone is Pierce's passing a profound blow for his family but also for
the local community to which he gave unstintingly of his time and talents.

Sincere sympathy to the the Murphy family at this time , Pierce a genuine gentleman, with memories from a trip to Lourdes many years ago . Rest in peace.

I was privileged to have been in the Order of Malta as a teenager in Thurles under the guidance of Pierce and other great first aiders who thought us so well in a lovely caring and fun environment.
Pierce gave so much of his time to so many in the Thurles community he will be greatly missed, but always remembered fondly.

Pierce was my history teacher in the CBS up to inter cert. I also remember Pierce on Order of Malta duty at Harty, Dean Ryan and Mid Tipp games in 70s and 80s, He was very professional, and gave excellent care on all injuries.

We are friends a long time.
Pierce was a wonderful community man in a unique quiet way.
A great carpenter evident in all the sets he made for many shows and always at Christmas at the Cathedral crib.
A wonderful 40 years teaching in Thurles CBS and many years on the sideline with his beloved Knights of Malta for Harty cup and many many matches.

I remember Pierce as a kind caring and diligent colleague, friend and teacher and particularly for his generosity of self and spirit in all the school extra curricular and the community activities he was part of. He gave so much of himself. He was an inspiration to all.
