Dear Miriam and family,
So saddened to hear of Brian’s passing, our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time. My late parents, (Dr Liam & Maura O’Shea), were guests at your wedding and often spoke fondly of you both. Dad and Brian were related – 2nd cousins I believe – and they kept in touch through the years; the banner county was also at the heart of their warm rapport! May Brian’s gentle soul rest in peace.

Saddened to read of Brian’s death in today’s Irish Times. I served as a Commissioner of the National Pensions Reserve Fund with Brian, a role not included in today’s article, not surprising in view of his very many contributions to Irish life. I was always impressed by his judgement, expertise and especially by his warmth and courtesy. It was an honour to know him and my sincere condolences to Miriam and all his family. Brid Horan

On behalf of my colleagues, I offer our sincere sympathies to Miriam and all the Hillery family on the death of our former colleague and friend, Professor Brian Hillery. Brian pioneered the study of industrial relations in Ireland. He established what was then the Department of Industrial Relations in UCD and held its foundation chair. Under Brian’s stewardship the department quickly established an international reputation as a leading centre for research and teaching in the field. We remember him as a kind, generous and helpful colleague.
