The sad news of Professor Tomkin's passing only reached me today. As my doctor from the age of eight, he was with me throughout my life and I am so grateful for his professionalism, knowledge, and friendship. He displayed a genuine interest in not only my diabetes but also how I was dealing with it. Always encouraging & positive, he taught me that the only way to stop diabetes from controlling your life is to control the condition yourself. My sincere condolences to his children and extended family.

I am so sorry to hear of Professor Tomkin's recent passing. He was such a lovely person - so caring and always in good humour. I owe him my life as he diagnosed my condition in 1989 with having Addisons. He put me on cortisone and it was like a miracle how I felt in less than 24 hours. May he RIP
I would like to send my condolences to all the family.

It was with great sadness I learned of Gerald’s passing. I remember him as his student, intern and more recently a consultant colleague. He was such a vibrant, cheerful and committed clinician a great mentor, international researcher and passionate advocate for those with diabetes. His work with Diabetes Ireland has made a tremendous difference to the lives of those with diabetes. A wonderful host and tennis player. My sincere condolences to Jenny, Adam and all his family. It was a privilege to have known you Gerald. Rest in peace.
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of professor Tomkin, my mam Marie was a patient of his for many years. Unfortunately my mam passed away this Tuesday and would have been devastated by this news. My mam always said it was professor Tomkin that kept her alive. She had diabetes for over 50 years. They were more than patient and doctor, professor Tomkin took such a huge interest in everything that was going on in her life. She absolutely adored him and thought he was so dedicated to helping people. When my mam took sick this week I immediately thought of professor Tomkin and couldn’t believe the news when I searched for him on the internet. May he rest in peace.
I only just heard of the death of Prof Tomkin. I was a patient of his for over 20 years until he finally retired. He was a lovely, kind, sincere doctor. We usually started off with a conversation about Irish politics or African politics (I work in Nigeria). I never felt rushed. I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to his family. He was a gentleman of the old school and the world will be poorer for his passing. May he rest in peace.
My sincere condolences to the Tomkin family on the passing of Prof. Tomkin. Such a wonderful doctor. I had the pleasure of working with him in the early days at the Adelaide Hospital when he was writing articles to The Lancet & other medical journals. He also treated my mother & he was a very kind man. May he Rest In Peace.
With sincere condolences on Professor Tomkin's passing and with heartfelt thanks for his work for those with diabetes in Ireland over many years.

sincerest condolences to all the family on the sad loss of Dr. Tomkin i was a patient of his many years ago and i owe the fact im still alive today to the goodman himself he was a perfect gentleman may he rest in peace.
Ah, Gerald! The enigma, the character, the endless energy! I (Tony) was his intern with diabetes, looking after Ireland's first artificial pancreas in 1987. It was cumbersome and difficult to use, but it was only when Gerald sent me round the country to talk about it that I discovered it was exactly what people with diabetes needed at the time, a source of hope!
Next, Gerald persuaded me to join the Diabetes Ireland Committee, from where I had a grandstand view of his talent for making things happen with almost no finances. He was the ultimate inspiring volunteer.
I ended up involved with the International Diabetes Federation, and found that Gerald was very well known and respected across Europe.
I enjoyed the celebration of his amazing life today, and it is great to hear that alongside their sense of sorrow, his family can reflect with warmth and humour on their precious time in the company of this remarkable man.

Deepest sympathy to all the family wonderful doctor
I have many fond memories of Gerald since the first time I met him - arriving in Limerick with Sarah in 1985, with her bicycle on the car roof. His glorious dahlia bed in Clontra. Always smiling and full of curiosity. My deepest sympathy to all the family.
Sincere sympathy to all the family, Gerald was a gentleman and his friendly greetings and warmth will be sadly missed on Rocky Valley Drive. May he rest in peace.
So very sad to hear of the passing of one of our most renowned, dedicated, hard working and inspirational members of An Taisce - Ireland's National Trust.
Gerald selflessly gave so much of his time to the South Dublin Local Association of An Taisce in conserving the natural environment and built heritage along with promoting the educational programmes such as Irelands National Spring Clean and many others. In recent years as it became more difficult to recruit volunteers Gerald single handily managed to keep the local association going and in fact only retired at the end of last year. An Taisce will be forever grateful for his service as a volunteer.
Gerald will be sorely missed by all who him especially the staff and members of An Taisce. 'Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam'

To the Gerard's family, friends and colleagues, please accept me most sincere condolences and deepest sympathies at the death of Gerard. He was a fantastic mentor, a great colleague and such a great individual to spend time in his company. His loss will be felt but hopefully solace can be found in memories of a life lived to it's full. May peace find him and his family, friends and colleagues.
On behalf of the Board, Council, staff and members of An Taisce, I would like to offer our sincere condolences to Gerald's family. Gerald was a longstanding and dedicated member of the Dublin South Local Association and a delegate to Council. His commitment to conservation of the built and natural environment was exemplary and he helped to build and sustain the local association over many years. His support to me personally through recent organisational challenges was much appreciated. He will be remembered and acknowledged by his An Taisce colleagues for many years to come.
What will I remember???..the bad jokes, the good jokes, loving anecdotes about Sarah, Jenny and Adam and the love story with your darling Fiona? I will remember tales of your adventures and misadventures as you led us through the intricacies of endocrinology. You were my friend, my teacher, then my colleague and then my doctor. Always brilliant, kind and compassionate. Went up to see you in the Beacon to find Fiona working hard as your medical secretary/receptionist. Seriously Prof???? Putting the wife out to work?? There is now a massive void in Irish medicine, Diabetes Ireland. There will never be another you. We could go to Donall O'Shea Prof but he's a UCD man!! Rest up now before you sort out your first dinner party up there. You will be missed down here terribly. A very grateful student/colleague and more recently patient. Top doc..pleasure to know you. Thank you so much for everything. RIP
Sincere condolences and sympathy to Prof's family and friends on the loss of a wonderful man, colourful character and tremendous doctor.

Sincere condolences to Adam and your family on this sad occasion.
Dear Adam, Aisling and family, I'm so very sorry for your loss- it was my great good fortune to meet Gerald firstly as a patient and then, much to his surprise, in his own kitchen when your children were born and i was there in my prifessional capacity! I relished our three consultations a year in the Beacon where my diabetes was rarely our topic of conversation - more usually we discussed recently published papers in many and varied disciplines! I often left him with a hug - most unprofessional yet totally acceptable. He was kindness personified and never, ever finger wagged even when it was fully deserved!! I really expected him to make the 100 and collect the Presidential cheque such was his zest for life and continuing interest in all things endocrine. Keep curious Gerald, wherever your gentle soul now roams. Much love Sue x
Deepest condolences to you all on the sad passing of Gerald. He was a warm, good-humoured gentleman and a Shankill character from our youth to the present day. May he rest in peace.

It is with great sadness to learn of the passing of Professor Gerald Tomkin, a superb caring, competent and compassionate doctor, a brilliant academic, and a wonderful friend and colleague. I have known Gerald for many years from my days as a junior doctor and later as a consultant colleague in the National Children’s Hospital, Harcourt Street and at Tallaght University Hospital, and more recently in my role as Chairman of Diabetes Ireland. He has always been a very energetic, enthusiastic, cheerful, hardworking, helpful and generous gentleman with vast expertise and wisdom. He established a superb service for patients with endocrine disorders and diabetes in the Adelaide Hospital and in Tallaght. He also established Diabetes Ireland, a charity which represents over 300,000 people in Ireland. He was formerly Chairman and more recently it’s President. He will be very greatly missed by his friends, colleagues, former students, many patients, the Board and staff in Diabetes Ireland, and by its many members.
