A wonderful friend, mentor and scholar. The literary programmes in Limerick owe much to his guidance over many years
Dear Maura
Richard and I were so sorry to hear of Maurice's passing. Our deepest and heartfelt sympathy goes out to you, Diarmuid, Maura and all of the family. Maurice and yourself extended great genuine friendship to both of us when I had embarked on a PhD, and his continued interest during that time and after was something that I cherish. He was a true gentleman, a true scholar, and he will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with you all.

Deep sympathy to Maura and family on the death of Maurice. Tonight at our William Carleton Society meeting in Augher we passed a vote of sympathy. He was along with Ben Kiely one of the most prominent people to rediscover and promote Carleton as a seminal influence on Irish literature. I also remember his lectures from UCD in the early 70s. He was a patron of the summer school for many years. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílís.

Deepest sympathies to Maurice's family. Like a whole generation of scholars, teachers and writers, I remember Maurice as a generous, kind and supportive lecturer from my undergraduate years at UCD and then as a pioneering editor of the Irish University Review. His extraordinary late blossoming as a poet is an inspiration to us all.
Maurice lectured me in Anglo Irish poetry in UCD in the 70's. I still have his autographed copy of Irish Poetry after Yeats. He was an inspiration but more importantly, a gentleman. Sympathies to his family. A great loss for you to lose suce a lovely man.

I share the family's sadness and tears as the inevitable has happened. What a lovely, generous, warm-hearted man, and what an estimable poet - I loved everything he wrote. The last time I spoke to him on the phone from Scotland, as his memory was faltering, I wished him "virtual hugs"; his reply was typical of him: "I'll accept any kind of hugs!"
My beloved Grandfather, I will miss your sweet smile and loving eyes. I will always be greatful for all that you have done and are to our family. The memories made, will be cherished. Though my heart breaks, I know you are home now, and you are watching over us. I love you.

Maurice was more than just a great Prof. He was a kind and gentle man. In addition to his family, he leaves hundreds of former students scattered all over the world, who will remember a man who loved sharing his vast knowledge of Literature with us. I am so grateful to have been one of his students. He was a National Treasure, and a humble man.

My deepest condolences to Maura , Maura Junior and Diarmaid and all the family.
May his soul rest in peace,
May his memory be eternal.
To me he wasn’t only my beloved professor, and a cherished friend, he was an epitome of
perfect Irishman- profoundly empathetic and genuinely concerned, well informed and sharp, witty and humorous, kind and authentic.
I met him first at Bethlehem University in 1987 - 1988 and it was a meeting that touched my life and those of my husband Hanna and son Alexander in more than one way.
In the following years up to August 2023
I kept in touch with him and Maura and every meeting with them was a gift, marked by warmth and hospitality, genuine interest, curiosity and heartfelt wishes.
I am sad at the news of his death,
I mourn his departure,
I remember him with gratitude,
I honor and celebrate his life.
My heart is with you.
