He made an extraordinary contribution to Irish graduate medical training by both his leadership of the RCPI and through his steady guidance of the introduction and structuring of the postgraduate training programme in over 15 specialties in Ireland over twenty years. It's strength today is the best legacy he could have wished for and it's effect will be felt for generations and for which we are all very grateful. May he rest in peace.

Joe's impact on medicine in Ireland was enormous. Leadership in spades. The concepts and practicalities of the SpR programmes were championed by Joe. His impact at St Vincents, UCD and RCPI remains outstanding. Joe was one of the true greats. My condolences to his family. May he rest in peace.
Dear Carol,
I was saddened to hear of Joe's death.
I formed a friendship and professional partnership with Joe when he first returned to Dublin, and over the years, we advised many hundreds of patients on how best to manage their illnesses. I always valued, and followed, his faultless and practical endocrinological advice. In addition we often discussed the generalities of life in medicine.
Joe was selfless in giving his time and expertise to many facets of the profession he valued so highly, and he was a respected guiding figure, not least in his leadership role in RCPI. His participation in these many endeavours will be sadly missed.
Carol, for you, and all of us, I know that warm memories of Joe will endure and soften the pain of loss with time.
Tona joins me in sending our sincerest condolences to you and all the family.
