Professor Deirdre Hunt

News of Deirdre’s passing hit me hard. Though she had told me as much in her Christmas email, I couldn’t believe it. Her radiance, sunny disposition and determination leave a void.
We met when both of us were new in Brussels in late 1989: enjoying opera, art shows, and lots of time over meals. With Len we were a happy threesome. She welcomed me into her home and showed me Cork and nearby, photographing me kissing the Blarney Stone! I met all four of her children and was impressed by them, especially getting to know the youngest: Anna. Deirdre, Len, and the oldest Emma even came to visit me in my hometown Louisville; got to know my family, spending one afternoon on a steamboat to Cincinnati. Years later, she took time to visit me in London when I was recuperating from an injury while posted in Gabon. We went to see Les Mis with our daughters. In recent years we’ve kept in touch: Once, she took time to drive up from where she was hundreds of miles away to visit me in Northern Virginia.
She made sure we kept in touch in the last decades. I’m so proud of her accomplishments at university, fulfilling her dream of a career as a professor. She surely influenced many by her curiosity and love for learning. Sadly, her light has gone out of my life, but I hope that we will meet again.

Our sincere condolences on Deirdre's passing. It was a great privilege to have known her , in our courthouse committee I got to know her very well. In our many meetings we were inspired by Deirdre's dedication and commitment to our project, along the way we had many great laughs. My parents, Michael and Elaine, were friends with Deirdre and Len since their youthful days in Oxford in the 1960s. Childhood holidays often centred around meeting them with their beloved children, in locations near and far, for animated debates, endless teasing, loud laughter and a carefully considered exchange of books. Long into the night the banter and hilarity would continue, always with a sense of deep affection, alongside a shared spirituality and intellectual curiosity.

They were a such a devoted couple - to one another and to their family. And after Len and Michael were gone, Deirdre continued to be a kind and loyal friend to my mother, even as she became less able to reciprocate.

My sisters and I are so very sad that the world will no longer benefit from Dee's grace, wit and warmth. We hope she is in heaven, enjoying evenings of banter with Len and Michael again, but we.know that she will be deeply missed. We are sending love and strength to Emma, Nick, Caroline, Anna and their families as they mourn their very special mother.

We are so very sorry not to be able to be with you but will be remembering and toasting Deirdre and Len tomorrow.

To Caroline and all Deirdre’s family, our deepest sympathy. We remember Deirdre as a distinguished and supportive colleague and for her personal kindness to us. Such a bright spark with a keen wit and a gift for telling the most amusing stories, and so very elegant yet down to earth at the same time. We are sorry not to be able to make it to the funeral but will be thinking of you all.

I was so sorry to hear the sad news about my Aunt and Godmother and my thoughts and my very best wishes go out to all of our cousins and their children.
Deidre was always so interesting to talk to and so well-informed, especially about her own research and our family history. Regarding the latter, she took me on a memorable tour of UCC many years ago and even last December she enthusiastically provided me with some very useful information and leads about her father and his life in Ireland in the early 1940s.
Deidre and Len were always great fun and they certainly 'brought the party' to our family gatherings in West Yorkshire during my childhood.

I feel very saddened to hear of Deirdre's passing. She was passionate about her work in UCC, she cared about the students, and navigated challenging situations with grace, humour and so much dignity. She was always a source of encouragement to me and others starting out in their careers. Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann.

I first met Deirdre about 17 years ago when her love for plants and life led her to the garden centre in Newmarket where I was working. We struck up a friendship and I was officially the pruner by design of her clematis and wisteria which adorned the front of her beautiful cottage. I visited her on numerous occasions and we would discuss everything from botany to the state of the planet. I was beguiled by her huge intelect and knowledge. Her commitment and compassion. She was, without doubt one of the cleverest people I've ever met. I will miss her enormously and I feel privileged to have known her.

My sincere condolences to Deirdre's family. I knew Deirdre from her work in UCC where she was a pioneer in the internationalisation of our business education. In particular through her work as Director of the B Comm International programme where she made a great contribution. May she rest in peace.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Deirdre's passing. She was a force to behold; dynamic, witty, charming, intellectual, engaging and always incredibly elegant. On top of all that she had a wonderful laugh and made others smile. I was lucky that our paths crossed, even just for a while.

My thoughts are with Professor Hunt's family. I had the fortunate experience of working with Deirdre at UCC (2012-2014) - she generously taught me so much about Ireland, business, working with a diverse range of colleagues. Our trip to her lovely home and meeting Leonard was one of the highlights of my time in Cork. She will be sadly missed.

My sincerest sympathy to Deirdre’s family. Deirdre and Len were part of the Derrinagree Sunday Mass community from the late 90’s. Deirdre also played a leading role in the restoration of the Monuments outside Dromagh Church. She made the application to the Heritage Council for grant aid which was successful. Unfortunately I am away so unable to attend her funeral Mass on Friday. I will offer Mass for Deirdre and Len. May she rest in peace. Fr Seán
